I think it is fairly obvious now what has transpired with KSP2 development at this point. Given the following points I think it is glaringly obvious that they've failed to implement the feature set they've described and Take Two stopped giving them more runway after the 3rd delay.
I don't see any realistic chance they will have the game at a state that will be anywhere feasible to launch it on Xbox Series X|S and PS5 by March 2024. Those first two bullet points should be obvious that their original intention was not to launch this as an "early access" pre-alpha proof-of-concept demo that they hastily pushed out the door. My gut feeling is that we will know when Take Two posts its end-of-year financials and the console versions for KSP2 are no longer listed for launching by end of FY24 (e.g. March 2024). I think if they don't get KSP2 shaped up to at least KSP1 features and performance to make a console launch feasible by March we will probably see it scrapped and the studio shuttered.
In my opinion, this is the biggest disappointment in gaming of 2023 which is saying a lot considering the disappointments this year; Gollum, Redfall, Atomic Heart, Blood Bowl 3, Forspoken, etc.
Nah, if we expand the scope I think the Saints Row remake beats out KSP2 in regards to brand destruction; but I guess now that I contemplate it more, might have been less disappointing as it seemed like it would do so from the outset of its reveal trailer; where as KSP2 seemed like it had the promise of expanding upon a great game all the way up until they rug-pulled the game with the early access launch announcement.
Otherwise, there is also Overwatch 2 depending on how you want to account for when that supposedly "launched"; considering when they "launched" it in Oct '22 it was basically a minor change to the original game with a few additional characters and they've since just completely abandoned what the majority of what they originally announced as making up Overwatch 2.
There are certainly a few more that are likely bigger disappointments and destruction of an IP than KSP2 is but it definitely is in the list of the top 5 biggest disappointments in the past decade imo.
IG most likely will not be closed, since they have been hiring people with experience in UE for a long time, it is obvious that most of their office is now making a different game. T2 now gets 90% of its money from consoles and mobile phones, KSP2 is an extremely insignificant product for them.
It was a fairly large disappointment at launch. Despite showing off RT as a tent-pole feature it launched without raytracing; with graphics that were substantially lower quality than what they touted in the trailers for the multiple years of delays. It did so mere weeks after showing off and touting raytracing and DLSS3 just before launch. It launched with a plethora of wide-spread game breaking bugs; several of which would just CTD upon starting the game. Lastly, imo the story was largely just boring without a consistent driving story arc. The aesthetics were cool and now it looks like they've resolved most of the bugs, however, afaik they still have yet to implement raytracing even though they're now saying they are moving to UE5 to implement raytracing.
The trailers they put out look fantastic; the actual gameplay that you can put your hands on... are disappointing in comparison.
It's hard to imagine that KSP2 will succeed, even with A LOT more time.
I am very curious to know where the failures are with this project. It's clear that the development team is very passionate about their work. Is this the failure of project management/publisher pressure? Is it developer competence? Funding? Everyone here wants the game to succeed, but there's something holding it back.
I'd lean toward a lack of publisher pressure (originally) along with developer (in)competence. I think PD tried giving them the runway and stay hands-off and giving them whatever support they needed; until it was beyond clear that Intercept Games was wildly off-target for their release estimates and Daddy Take Two put his foot down. Then PD said patch it up and get it out the door asap!
Being passionate about something doesn't make you good at that thing. Just look at the plethora of delusional people who've gone on American Idol that are "passionate" about being a singer....
Yeah, but at the the same time I think we should be considerate about the hard work a lot of people are putting into this project - it's probably very disheartening to have their work constantly shat upon due to problems outside of their control.
Assuming the assessment I made previously as to how we've arrived here; the only portion of the problems that were out of their control would be the publisher putting their foot down and giving them an ultimatum to ship-it or get off the pot. The actual problems with the game that people are ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ on are wholly within their control and are directly as result of their own actions (or inactions)
The publisher didn't make the game in this state. They granted them 3 years worth of extensions. The fact the actual development team wasn't able to even deliver a reasonable state of a basic sandbox in 5 years of development is squarely on their own shoulders. If they find that disheartening I'm sure they have a mirror, or a mirror-like surface, somewhere in the office to which they can go blame the responsible party for their plight.
Sums it up well.
Maybe, someday, they'll get it fixed. I check back when the updates come, just to top off my disappointment levels. That, and to read all the whining and raging in the discussions. Some of them are even mildly entertaining.
i've tried to keep the faith but seeing as we are past the 7 month post EA release and weve had 3 patches(small) and 2 hotfixes it doesnt bode well. I've also changed my review from positive to negative as its not morally right to sit there and say "i recommend this game" as sadly i just cant...and thats truly heartbreaking.
if they pull off a no mans sky-esque escape ill happily eat my words!
I enjoy reading them myself, especially the "the community is toxic" ones. i really laugh at them...
