KSP1 started with fewer people - about 3k but constantly increased the number of players:
Month 1: 3k
Month 5: 8.3k
KSP2:
Release: 11k
Day 3: 3.3k
Because 15 isnt nearly enough - the first game sold for about 20 Dollars - this game will be bigger in scope so i think a higher price is okay even if its just EA - so i think 30 Dollars seem like a good start for the version as it is now. Its not cheap but also not over the top so people will be willing to join in even if the game is still bugy and lacking lots of features.
I would have instantly bought it at 30 Dollars because i really enjoy KSP1 and i would actually also be way more forgiving at that price point.

It really comes down to do they have unlimited funding internally or not. If Intercept is already pressuring them the game may be in serious trouble. If they have full support from Intercept to see the game through to 1.0. They honestly probably don't give two craps about the current anger etc because they know what the game will be over the next 1 to 2 years.
Yeah thats the main problem i see. While its normal to have less players after the weekend its not normal to drop below a game that was released a decade ago so fast.
I think this game will have a pretty bad time the mix of:
- way too expensive for EA
- not very much content in EA and a lot of problems (would be way less of a problem with a different price)
- way too expensive even for a full release (this isnt an AAA game and they even want to increase the price further at release?!)
- high hardware requirements
- combined with the negative press it alread gets and the negative community feedback
All of this in the worst case will lead to modders not switching to KSP2 and KSP2 neither getting new playedrs nor even making the old players buy/switch - especially since i wonder how mods are even supposed to work when the game itself already brings high end PCs to very low framerates.
At worst this was a test to see consumer interrest that turned into a self fulfilling prophecy due to the price and the state of the game ...
