what's the point of melee if player can't even knock down a robot?

Melee is a traversal tool, not a method of combat.

Boils down to break obviously breakable boards obviously placed across a doorway for the obvious possible path.

Maybe you can smack something smaller than a t-800 to have different results?

Beyond occasionally breaking wooden boards blocking a door or window, I can't think of a single time I ever used the technique to any meaningful effect.

oh i was fighting some random groups of bots earlier, a spiderbot come out of nowhere, shot it till 10%hp and run out of ammo . I press F and bonk it

Do people really expect to knock over a 500 pound termie with a piece of busted pipe?

As others have said, the pipe is just there to break down barricades and in an emergency take out the weakest enemies.
If you want to play a first person game with useless melee try one of the STALKERs and their shoddy knife.

As users have said it is to break down boards and you use it so little, I forgot how to and had to look into the keybindings to find the key again.

When you run out of ammo you should sneak or run past. There is a single-use knife that can be used to take out terminators from behind, but apart from that there are no other melee weapons.

I have to admit I completely forgot there was a melee option when I encountered a wooden blocked path after hours of gameplay.

Would've been cool if you could do a Kyle Reese pipe last stand thing against a T-800 that would give you time to leg it if you ran out of ammo or something.

I am surprised no one mentioned its use as a rat smacker. Every rat you bonk and collect is worth 7 trade resources. Mark even mentions hunting rats for his quota.
