Bonus objectives on first attempt
I'm just curious, is the game designed for the bonus objectives to be completed on the first attempt? Or, are they built with the idea that you'll come back later, when you are stronger? For example, on the missions with the 2 basilisks, early on, one objective is to kill a basilisk. Obviously this will be much easier (I'm assuming) once I'm more powerful, but it feels like I'm cheesing it if I just come back later when it's easy. Unless that's intended?

Its intended to come back later when stronger for the harder to get bonus objectives. Granted it is possible to complete the basilisk one but I was getting my butt handed too them too many times when facing the overflow of wasps.

However... before the final boss of this game, you get every single bonus objective out there because you will need it, badly!
Haven't had too much issues completing bonuses objectives on most maps in normal difficulty but some can be pretty tricky until you've unlocked more abilities or upgraded more skills. I think the general idea is to try to do them and if you can't, then re-try the mission at a later time when you are able to do so.

Also completed 99% of the sub-objectives on the first attempt of Normal difficulty. That is, I had to retry missions several times until successful, but didn't have to retry the mission at a later point after getting stronger.

Specifically, the Basilisk mission is hard: there are still few mechanics available to you at this point, which makes solving the sub-objectives a tight squeeze. Completing subs in later missions becomes easier as you gain abilities and have more methods.

Ok, thanks everyone, that's what I was looking for.

For anyone having trouble with the basilisk first run, put pretty much all the gems you have earned so far into fire uses + fire dmg for the little red mage. The rest of the group can lead the npc and deal with wasps, while the red mage stays just out of range of the basilisks hitting them with a big nuke each turn.

By the time your guys have killed the wasp nest, move the npc 1 square away from exit, by this time the mage should be nearby with one of the basilisks nearly dead. Have everyone focus attacks on it for one round and exit the npc as soon as you kill it.

Hope that helps anyone struggling to get it on the first run :)

Fire is definitely helpful for damage output, and ice is helpful for slowing them down.

I got all the bonus objectives on my first attempt on hard. Its doable, you just need to use some outside the box tactics. You certainly have to learn the map and figure out what skills/gear to use for each map. But my playthrough is proof that you dont need to replay anything.

To kill the basilisk you should use the mage to teleport expplosive barrels in the way of the basilisk at choke points (so he can't move around it). The basilisk will then use his turn to attack the barrel at close range wasting a turn for him and dealing massive damage to himself at the same time. He is 2x2 large, so just don't leave any 2 square gaps between the barrel and the wall.
