Fair warning, you're gonna make some Octopath fans either upset or happy

I would link to the song for side by side comparison but nobody's posted it online yet so here's the next best thing

Well, that's not funny at all. We asked the composer of the world map music and he said it's purely a coincidence. Just to be sure we removed the world map music in 1.0.22 and he will compose a new piece of music to replace it.

So we went through this last night on Vinesauce's Stream. It sure is VERY SIMILAR.

Supposedly there is more music that is EXACTLY like it's Octopath traveler version. So, you have a lot worse then some un-happy fans. This can bring up a lawsuit for copyright infringement by Square Enix. Doesn't help that Octopath traveler is releasing soon on Steam.

The 2nd video is real crap to make any sort of comparison with this guy talking all the time.
I noticed a clear ressemblance through the choice of musical instruments, but didn't find any ressemblance through melody.

I don't know how I could have been more clear about why I posted it.

Yeah, after talking with someone who knows a bit more about music, it became more understandable (to me) how something coincidental like this can occur. My post is more of a warning about folks who wouldn't be as understanding. Good on you for taking quick action.

I don't buy it. People want to think everyone is nice and honest but that's not true. There is far more chances that they got scammed by their composer than that music got recreated by accident.

I don't even own the game so I have nothing to lose here. The musician friend specifically pointed out that the most obvious duplication, the flute notes, is a well known chord progression used a lot.
That said, the developer looks to have contracted out the music; it's not someone in-house. So if anything, we should trust the developer never meant for this to happen. Giving the benefit of the doubt is becoming too rare in these times but I'd prefer to give it.

The devs really got scammed by the composer I think. Listen to the song that plays here https://youtu.be/iZaAnqeZ7Mo?t=1936 at 32:16 compared to this https://youtu.be/fbOqcR-BORo?t=49 at the beginning and then at the main them at 49 seconds.

This is far outside of the realms of parody or inspiration. This guy had balls to rip straight from Square Enix games, since so many people know this music, and to take not only from a game that just came out but also FFVII. I feel awful for the devs, but they need to know as soon as possible.

'Music is like extreme final fantasy'' :steamhappy:

It's still not obvious to me that it's pale copy, but heii, i might be ''slow''.

Hrm, wouldn't surprise me then if one of the combat music tracks was also strongly inspired by some JRPG track.
As soon as Mad Eye shows up the first time, the atmospheric dungeon music switches some hyper-active JRPG/Anime music which I found to be horribly misfitting.

Music switch at 2:10
Seeing that one of the tracks could potentially come from FF, makes this notion even stronger.

While it's true that there are popular melody progressions, that there are times when your brain knows what the next note should be even when hearing it for the first time, the tracks here are quite similar. They're obviously not the same, but at the very least, someone was seriously riffing on the Square style. Incidentally, that's one of the reasons I bought the game in the first place, and it would be disappointing to find out if those tracks were not original. Like burial, I just thought it was an homage to the other titles as well.

And I'm not blaming the devs - it'd be on the composer to fix it.

Yeah. This is a major thing in the music world:

Are you actually listening to the song? The most similar aspect is the flute, and the stronger melody from Tifa's theme isn't apparent in the sample you cite. This isn't some Blurred Lines situation where you hear Marvin Gaye clearly for the entire song. Probably not a copyright concern (10 seconds) and more of "inspiration", which is so common in music it's not worth pointing out examples (the practice of "sampling" is not the same, of course).

You have no clue what you are talking about. This is the exact same instrumentation, key, chords, with the melody just missing a note and then barely changed a bit later. This is like replacing random words in a stolen essay for your homework. It is like 90% tifas theme note for note. If you cant hear this, may god help anyone you are musically involved with.

Yeah this seems to be a copy of tifa's theme while missing a note. It really annoys me that the note is missing when i listen to it, like it's Tifa's Theme on a budget lol..
