i think gamepads were simply not intended, otherwise the gameplay would make concessions to a comfortable "dual stick" approach.
this situation is pretty much the same as terraria, the side scrolling nature allows you to assume a safe bet with gamepads but there is at least one element of combat and one element of movement that work better, no matter what, with a keyboard and mouse. even reconfiguring and remapping will technically allow the gamepad.. there will remain a hurdle with either combat or movement elements no matter how it is addressed player side.
in the end, i do prefer keyboard and mouse with the full compliment of wonkiness entact. the axis based aiming depends on faster mouse associations which is physically and technically impossible with an analogue stick (even with two).
for instance, a fast upward sling with a grapple and aiming down a corridor as you zoom by it is better done with keyboard and mouse, it's a situation natural to the game. with gamepad, it can be accomplished but only through limited means and with less variation. the matter of aiming must be done beforehand by setting the aiming axis before launch. little can be done in the way of adjusting if upward movement is to be fast. with keyboard and mouse, the instantaneous registration of the aim through mouse allows for dozens or hundreds tiny variations within one second to be set upon the aiming axis at any point independent of movement.
the gamepad is simply not intended nor optimal given the fact this is not simply a "dual stick shooter" overhead or side scrolling. it is side scrolling with a completely different beast under the hood that demands more precisions and variation within split seconds than a gamepad can accomplish.
that's just the way it is. the claim that gamepads are supported is technically true and i have 3 brands now that all work the way they should with the game but the game does not PLAY as it should with them.
sorry, i hope you have the comfort level established with kbm to play a game like this. it's just way better.
This felt like a dual thumbstick shooter. It's awkward on keyboard and mouse. Really awkward. I was hoping that the gamepad settings would be easier. Aiming SHOULD BE firing. Holding the thumbstick in a direction should fire the weapon in that direction.
Is there any way to actually pull this off?
I've been playing this just fine with 360 controller. Left jumpstick moves the character and jumps. Right thumbstick moves reticle. So a dual stick shooter, jump is just on the stick and not on any button.
C'mon Devs, everyone knows jump goes on the 6 O'clock button.
