Feeling a Little Lost
Hi there,

I couldn't find a guide in the game files for Romancing SaGa 3, but I'm completely new to the series and am uncertain how to go about getting started.

Info: I chose Katarina + Artemis for her star + a greatsword as her main weapon. Hopefully, this isn't a bad combination! Her magic stat seemed lowish, so I figured going more melee would be a better choice.

I'm lost in the following:
1. Do I want to grind the mobs in the opening bit for aurums? I ended up not bothering and moving on, so if it's important, I'll need to restart since I am at Pidona now.

2. Should I be buying gear/spells immediately? Is there something I should be mindful of towards who learns which spells? I went to a place with enemies and one of my party members is dying really quickly, and I haven't progressed since I restart to avoid losing their LP, but I'm not having fun trying to do that.

3. Is there a timer in this game? i.e. Missable quests if I rest too often, or?

4. Lastly, I have six people in my party, but only five can fit in the formation. How do I go about rotating them to something better?

Any other information would be awesome. Sorry this turned into a longer post. I tried to look via GameFaqs and stuff to learn what I could, but I wanted to avoid spoilers and just get some general information, and there isn't much of that to be found.

These games scale pretty quickly so only a very little early grinding is recommended.

It's ok to spend some early money on gear but I prefer to save it for spells.

I don't completely remember but I want to say there are timers on several quests.

You can remove some party members by talking to barkeeps. Some people will refuse to leave.

Thank you so much!

I found out part of the reason why I was struggling. It seems Tarte is absurdly weak in the game, and me insisting on dragging her around without knowing what I was doing was not helping me. She was the one who kept dying and losing LP, which was leading me to repeatedly reload and not have a good time overall.

Monsters don't drop much money, but there is a quest in Lance that gives you 1000 gold and then I think 2000 gold to simply run through an area to deliver weapons. If you kill all the bandits in the first one, you can extort them for information and then money, the info leads you to their den which has a bandit chief you can extort for up to 3000, or kill and take 2000, 500, and 500 from his cave. There is also a quest in Zweig where an eccentric professor wants you to capture her pets, and you can either give the pets to her or sell them to a guy in Zweig for up to 5000+ (trying to haggle further makes him refuse to speak to you). Make sure to do the pets thing before the cave of sacrifice as entering it locks you out of it.

You can only have one element per character, you're better off looking up spell descriptions and seeing what fits. As a rule, status ailments and healing spells are really useful. If you want a good earlygame mage, do the weapon delivery quest and in Yarmouth explore thoroughly to do the Robin quest, then go to the warehouse to recruit him (if you get the fat one, just leave and come back until you get the normal one, the fat one has much better HP but less magic and strength). As a rule for equipment, defense is king.

Some quests will be locked out if you progress too far, for instance the weapon delivery quest cannot be completed properly if you get too strong, and fighting the rat swarm in the cave locks you out of the pet quest. There isn't a timer however, I believe quests unlock based on your max HP.

Formation menu. If you bench your leader you get the commander mode.

RS3 is much less strict on LP than RS2, you can replenish it all by sleeping at an inn, and someone dying in battle just kicks them from the party. She is weak but she learns small sword skills very quickly and has a cold resist item.

Erp. I went straight to Archfiend Palace because Charl and Muse and Thomas? I think sent me there automatically to find somebody. Maybe I'm way jumping the gun for Katarina and her peeps?

Does Fleeing from fights count towards enemies getting more powerful?

That's a normal earlygame quest for Katarina, but if you start running into demons you've gone too far. Gon is in the corner of one of the side rooms that have slime monsters and goblins in them. You have to jump over a gap to reach him.

No, running isn't penalized in this game.

Thanks for the info on Gon! I was trying to fight the dragons at that point, lol. Appreciate knowing I could turn back.

Another question:
Do any of my party members ever leave outside of me asking them to? I don't want to spend a lot of money on spells on a dude who will peace out.

The enemies scale up as you fight more battles. Since enemies don't generally drop loot, grinding on them won't get you anywhere near the amount of money needed to purchase gear, learn spells, etc. This means that said enemies will eventually outpace your progress.

Instead, you get the loot you need by exploring dungeons and completing quests. Focus on those and your weapon and magic levels will go up well enough from the fights you do get into.

here you go OP... put your nostalgia to full blast with this ol' school guide page...

I don't think it's the ultimate source but at least it guides you through the entire game, with screenshots. Good luck!

The Shrine is awesome for quests and progression. If you're looking for more detailed information about game mechanics and how things work then this is an excellent resource too: https://romancing-saga-3.blogspot.com/

First playthroughs of SaGa games are always the hardest, but I think the more you know about the mechanics the more fun the game becomes. Hope you enjoy your Katerina playthrough! I'm going through her story right now myself on the Switch version of this game.

Really appreciate the community and all the advice in this thread. This helps me get into the game for the first time with a lot more confidence :)
