What the hell is wrong with the controls??
I love hardcore plateformers. Super Meat Boy, Celeste, VVVVVV and lots of little known others. But I rapidly hit a wall on Almost there. It was fun at first, like the 30 first levels, but the controls became a major issue as soon as the levels started to get challenging. In most great platformers, you have to do really hard things with a really intuitive gameplay. In Almost there, I struggle to do easy things and I quickly became frustrating, I wasn’t having fun and I uninstalled it.

The controls are one of the most confusing I’ve seen I my gamer life. Why, WHY does the character jump when you change direction? I’m trying to adjust my trajectory a little bit and bang, it jumps again and most of the times I’m ♥♥♥♥♥♥. Other time I want to double jump… but I waited a little too long, the character has lost its momentum and I just fall, feeling hopeless. This was a really weird idea that ruins an otherwise perfectly fine game.

I guess that with enough practice, I’d start getting it and rush through the level. But here’s the thing, I really don’t agree that I should have to do that. Such a simple game should be immediately fun. In Super Meat Boy, it takes about 2 minutes to really get a hand on the controls. It’s still very challenging, but it’s challenging because of what the game throws at the player, not because the gameplay is unintuitive.

Hope the next game will be better, I don’t have enough patience for this one.
