I'm not sure if you learn furnace recipes from magazines, but if you do then it might be worth subscribing to some of the magazines by calling the publishers through the pay phone.
From what I've seen it seems like there's likely a few ways to turn mining into money, or at least be able to create more advanced materials needed for tenement upgrades. One thing I would avoid is selling the ore, the returns seem terrible and possibly in the negative if you use the train and pay for diesel. More so if you sell ore mined on one of the claims, as they seem to give less than 1/30th of the cost of a pickaxe in OC instead of RM out of a full pickaxe worth of ore (albeit I wasn't mining under the influence of mushrooms so it's possible the returns are better with their buff).
