Is it possible to get soft locked?
There isn't really any directions for this game, the game doesn't tell you much, I am just kind of playing blind so I was eating mushrooms every time I saw the mushroom icon. Am I not supposed to do this?

Anyways, my dude is stuck in a loop of bad mental health, everything I eat or drink damages me which I think means I have a fungal infection (doctor said 3 days to live.) But I don't have enough money to pay for any treatments. I'm walking around with like 20 hp all the time and all my mood icons in the red.

I basically have no clue wtf is going on inside this game, living like a bum selling bottles and farming.

Should I start over and not eat green mushrooms? If I do restart do I avoid mushroom addiction or whatever when building my char?

Mushrooms have their advantages, but they will infect you with the mystery illness, which is incurable and eventually will kill you. Like you said, once you're sick, you have to take medicine to stave off death, but it is inevitable.

How far have you gotten in the storyline? are you familiar with the guy in the basement that sells furniture? There is also another guy in one of the apartments that runs a furniture store, its on the lower levels of the complex. Both of them have a chance of selling a dishwasher, which when combined with detergent, can wash stolen items so they can be sold to any merchant (though there is a guy later on that will buy stolen stuff). There's also a handful of them spread out in various apartments, you can check the wiki to see where. That's probably the quickest way to earn money, stealing and laundering. Check the hardware dealer and the one stop shop for lockpicks and the 24hour store for dishwasher detergent. though you can find some here and there while scavenging

The next way is to make alcohol. Again, the furniture guys will sell the machines you will need; masher, fermenter, and distiller. You can take the vegetables you grow on the farm and turn them into alcohol that you can then sell to the drink vendor in the market, and to the one-stop-shop guy. This however takes a few days, and isnt very profitable until you improve your distilling skills (you'll make crap and poor quality at first). There is also a guy you meet as part of a questline that will buy mash from you, useful as sometimes you'll fail and make unusable mash that he'll still buy

Third is to learn recipes, cook, and sell them in the market. Again, cooking machines like the stovetop will be found at the furniture dealers. You can also grow mushrooms and sell them, but be careful to be wearing a respirator to lower the chances of infection. You can also set up your own farm in your apartment complex, but you'll need special lights and a lot of soil to make the pots.

Fourth is to learn furniture recipes, make them, and sell them to the two furniture dealers. This is probably the easiest, as most materials can be readily found while scavenging.

Fifth is to get a job. Right now, you can work on the farm, at the call center (in one of the apartment buildings), or in the mines. You won't get much, but it'll be enough for you to get some food and medicine.

It's best to avoid infection at all costs until you have a steady stream of income from the apartments, as the medication can get expensive. As such, i would recommend starting over, choosing alcohol and smoking (cigarette) addictions only, and avoiding green mushrooms like the plague; make multiple save slots and get checked out at the doctor's frequently, so you won't lose much progress if you have to revert. Alternatively, you could edit the game files and set your infection level to 0 if you don't want to completely start over, but to each their own.

The first few days should be spent collecting bottles and farming between setting up your apartment and sweating out your addictions in the sauna behind your complex. you can eat the vegetables from the farm raw iirc, so just do that. there is a clean water spout in the basement of one of the apartments, use that to fill up your water containers as dirty water can infect you. Farming can get you a couple thousand OC per day, more than enough to sustain yourself once you get enough crops going to fill the large plots, just dont forget about them or they'll rot and youll have to start over from square one.

Finally, try and get some tenants ASAP. A few have really low standards and will be happy with hardly any improvements to the apartment, and once they're in its a steady stream of income without you having to do anything else

Be careful to keep your happiness high, or else your character will start cutting himself and will bleed to death (no joke). To avoid this, drink only a can of beer (specifically the can of branded beer, it has the lowest alcohol percent) when your addiction gets red, and only a certain kind of cigarette (check the wiki) again when in the red, all the while trying to maximize downtime in the sauna (be sure to bring food and drinks in there with you!) as that's how you sweat out your addictions (and will improve happiness a bit)

Hope this all helps!

I don't know how far in you are but if you are looking for ways to Cure the illness, you should look into the Getting a Passport quest. Part of it activates another quest in which you can find a device that can bring you To The Other Side. You will need Lots of batteries for that though. I forgot which type. Think it was D though. On the Other Side you see glowing red orbs and you have to touch them. You will know when you are cured, an achievement will pop up.
BUT. Do this only after you bought enough time by doing all the stuff the above poster has said. Stealing and farming gives you lots of money in short term, mining is more for long term. You can also sell stolen items to Passmore, if you know him already. He pays you in RM so you can take that money straight to the pharmacy or to Dr. Pena without having to exchange it first, since the exchange rate is horrible.
I managed to cure my illness once using the Device (Not telling you the name but you will know when you found it, it's super obvious and seems out of place for a game like this) and going on a wild goose chase across the map to find those Red Orbs.
It's also just a nifty thing to have. I would advise you to do some main quests either way, once you know you can live long enough to actually complete them.

Edit: I forgot, but you can also temporarily fiddle around with the difficulty settings and make the game easier for yourself while dealing with this. Setting the speed of which your addiction needs rises to half will already go a long way and give you more time to do everything else. You can always play around with the difficulty settings and the game won't treat you any different for it.

if you visited the doctor, he must have given you the mushroom substitute, use that instead of real mushrooms. to cure the disease you need the device - either proceed with the passport quest or just break in deekula b1 room (you will need a fuse)

Thanks for all the explanation and thanks to the other 2 replies. I'm definitely going to restart as I took all the traits that gave me +mushroom addiction when building my char as I didn't know any of the game mechanics. I was eating green mushrooms from the vending machine every time the icon popped up so I think my dude is probably unrecoverable (lol.)

I don't think I made it very far at all in the story, I was about a week in and spent most of the time just trying to figure stuff out. I was barely about to start making alcohol before I got into the loop of bad stuff happening. I didn't even know about the sauna until I started trying to find info, but by this point the sauna was making me thirsty and the water was killing me due to advanced fungal infection.

Should I never eat green mushrooms or only eat them at like 95%, or should I smoke the cigs with their affect?

Gonna give it another go and hopefully not mess myself up so fast this time. Thanks again to all.

The cigarettes are better because they don't give you fungal disease but honestly if you can then just go turkey from day 1. Less you feed the addiction the easier it is to fight
info May 29 @ 11:51pm
the mushroom disease isn't incurable. just fyi. there's even an achievement for recovering from it.
you can also fight the SMW (starlborgs mushroom virus) sickness by.
Taking a sauna you need to stay sometime inside it for some time and scope water on the agrigate (this also helps whit mode semi permanenty)
getting explosed to radioation (not sure how far you are in game if thats an option).
and finnaly drink alchool as alchool kills SMV.
Just dont drink like 3 liter of Moonshire (will knock you unconsious and thats bad) but like drink 1 bottle or something (make sure its shroom/mushroom free).
