Max Masher?

I'm currently trying to figure out the quest where Max is teaching me how to make a mash. He turns his head around and talks about a barrel where I'm supposed to put the ingredients but none of the barrels behind him works. Could he possibly be pointing at the barrels inside the locked room? I can't open the door either.

i didnt need to put them anywhere, i just gave them to him. 10 suger bags (not flakes) and 5 yeast.

Wait you gave him 10 sugar bags and 5 yeast?
He says one pack of each and I don't get any dialoge option once I have them.
I have
11,5L of water (canister)
one bag of mushroom high potency (fantastic taste)
1 pack of yeast (94%)
1 pack of sugar
1 pack of malts

What is missing?

Also this whole thing doesn't have an active quest running, is that normal?

Edit: one has to answer with " you already told me that", when he lists the ingrediences then he will tell you about the barrel. But now I'm in the same boat as OP. Not sure what to do since there is no barrel accesible.

Edit 2: okay apparently 10 sugar and 5 yeast was the old requirement, seems this was patched recently, but the new ones doesn't seem to work at the moment

I managed to get the dialogue until he gives you the recipe, but it's totally different one ... it's just a beer mash
Here are the answeres to get to the recipe
-I dont know, maybe
-Okay, teach me to make some damn good mash!
-About that mashing...
-Yes! Mashing!
-You already told me that!
-Okay...
-Is that all?
-Can you give me the recipe on paper
and then you get the beer mash recipe, which does not need the stuff he mentioned in the beginning, which was:
water, one bag of fantastic mushroom, 1 pack of yeast, 1 pack of sugar, 1 pack of malts.

However it's still unclear in which mash tun it's suposed to go. I'm starting to suspect it's not even intended that you use his devices, but that you should build and use your own mash tun. If so, his head movement is very missleading at that point

for all the wondering on this quest. at the of the chain talk he ask you for some ingridience.
the player will spell out the delivery.
for me it was 5 yest and 10 suger
deliver it to Max mash and thats it.
you dont make it and he dont teach you anything (this was just you getting him the ingridience).
and that is just the optional objective.
you can in fact as soon as you meet Max for the first time go.... Nevermind and report to Speakeasy that Max have lost the screw.
the only diffrence is maybe a cash reward from speak easy.
No mater the outcome you still be asked to deliver mash to speakeasy and get paid for it.
you also be offered the secret distelery behind the shelf.

Okay then it's an optional untracked side activity.
The confusing part is that he never mentiones 5 yeast and 10 sugar.
These 5 an 10 I can still see in old videos about this quest.
However in the current state of the quest he says:

Which is missleading since you can't even "deliver" them to him. There is no "Here you go" option. Also the way he tells you what to do implies you have to do it in his flat somewhere, but it's not the caes. That quest needs some rework.
Anyways I stopped bothering about it and will create the stuff on my own devices later on.

This game is a lot about just trying things out! which lead me to discovery of a lot of mashing stuff! mashmash, mash.... mash...

He is literally mumbling functional recipes and all you gotta do is remember the names of the veggies, most mashing recipes are pretty straight forward.

Mushrooms act as a "Yeast"
