Purpose of apartment upgrading?

I don't understand why I need those fancy upgrades that cost tonnes of money if I get arrested every time I sleep in my bed. I have level 4 upgrade, I believe I should have at least the luxury of lockable doors, if not the loaded shotgun aimed at intruders, like some of the dwellers have. Instead I either get robbed (lost my backpack with osrat and polonium) or get arrested 9 out of 10 times I sleep at home. I found that it's actually safer to sleep on random mattresses across Obeseuer. Is it a bug?

best place to sleep without getting robbed is either an upgraded bed in your own apartment or in the hostel. I'd avoid sleeping anywhere else. You can check with the security guard as to possibly being arrested. (They give you the option of turning yourself in if you have an arrest pending, so if that option doesn't come up, you are probably not 'wanted' and can sleep at home.)

The hostel is even worse, they always turn you in. I do have a huge bounty on me for breaking out of prison, I cannot bribe myself out of it (10 figure number), I cannot serve my sentence (4 days, no food and duck addiction), so save scumming is my only option right now, since my house is not my castle as it turns out

I'm not sure I understand the question. You mean - what do I think it should be? I assume my room in the tenement should be my safe place however "bad" my character is, otherwise I see no point in having it at all.

Supposing I go out and rob a store, and I'm seen doing it and the police know exactly who I am. I go home. I go to sleep. The police, to absolutely nobody's surprise, come and arrest me.

I see no point in having a house at all. How could the police come and arrest me in the safety of my own home? It just doesn't make any sense. I don't understand.

Try eating lots of servings of food, maybe 10 or more. Then turn yourself in; you might last four days.

Well, I've tried something better (or so I thought). I broke into one of the cells through the vent and stuffed it with food, drinks, meds and ducks. One would also need alcohol, since one full day in jail makes you addicted to alcohol (idk is this a bug or a little devs' joke). Then I lockpicked the door and got "caught" by the guard. Sadly, this scheme didn't work. The sentence just never gets shorter, however long you stay there. It's still 4 days, the guard says. Again, I don't know if this is a bug, a feature, or something barely implemented and never finished properly.

You can go put some ducks in each of the two cells by sneaking in there through the back route if you've done it before. Otherwise at like 3 am he's sleeping. (under the beds in the grate) for duck addiction they will stay there indefinitely as far as I know. Saw it on YT don't know if they disappeared later. Same for food though they are supposed to feed you the one side doesn't have a can opener.

That's what I did. The problem was the sentence length which was announced to be 4 days but is in fact much longer or even infinite.

There may be a cheat way to edit it with commands. Also if you sleep without anything stolen on you I don't think they arrest you. I always put my stuff up before I sleep heard some laughing once and woke up with poop in my inventory and my backpack was gone. Another time I got the message you were suspected of a crime and the cops searched you. Didn't go to jail though.
