I feel like it should be really obvious how to acquire one when selling firewood is one of the first things suggested to you, but I cannot figure out where to get an axe from. Tried the general store by the tenement and the hardware store. Help.

Also took me a while to find one as well. You can sometimes buy them at the one stop shop and hardware store but they are quite expensive and it only has a percentage of durability. Alternatively there are some tools placed in the environment inside buildings, apartments, or just hidden around that you can find for free.

outside an apartment stabbed into a door is a free axe or you can just steal the axe from the garden above o mart. Good luck finding the sledgehammer and pickaxe.

God, I was roaming around outside thinking there had to be an axe lodged into SOMETHING. Thanks for the head's up.

And funny enough I've been using a cheap sledgehammer from the one-stop shop for a minute now, got me into some really good places too. There's also a pickaxe being sold as well now, so I guess sometimes you just get lucky.

Spoilers on sledgehammer because I've not seen one for sale for a week:

You can find one in a shack to the left of the One Stop Shop, the ground floor door is locked but there's another door above it, with some small parkouring you can get to the second door which is unlocked. You can find a bunch of goodies along with a sledgehammer in there, and a shocked resident.

Ironically, firewood is worthless despite being recommended for money making. You're better off turning those logs into planks to invest into renovations later. Or to flip furniture you craft but thats so boring I stopped doing it after getting the first renovation.

Just for anyone that comes here in future, I've noticed the sledgehammer is sold more often than the axe. If the sole purpose you want an axe is to get into closed off apartments, sledgehammers will work on plank barricades and bricks (axe won't work on brick) so until you're at a point where you actually want an axe to chop logs, you don't actually need one.
