How is "trap" a slur?
There's hardly any negative connotation.

The term trap means different things to different people. To crossdressers, it's a term of endearment, "you pass so good, you could trap a straight man". To a person who's actually transitioning, calling them anything other than a woman you are denying them their choice of gender and the term trap has a notion of deception.

The history of term trap is really not much different than the term ♥♥♥♥♥. It could and in some cases is used in hurtful, hateful ways. However it can also be used as a term of endearment, such as a sexy ♥♥♥♥♥, or having ♥♥♥♥♥ energy (sass). Both terms ended up far removed from their original definition (♥♥♥♥♥ being a female dog in heat). It's nowhere near as bad as dropping a N-bomb, but it can be disrespectful and rude if you use it in that way.

I however do not believe in the policing of speech, as I feel it just creates ire, frustration, and even more misunderstandings. Really, people just need to talk to people and create understanding, find a common ground, etc. Banning speech isn't going to stop homophobes / transphobes from being the way they are. A look at America in the last 6 months has shown how well that's worked with racism.

I guess, just be respectful. Unfortunately, I don't know a better term for trap, you've got your crossdressers, but trap is a tier above that. It also has the bonus of being said in a conversation without immediately drawing the attention of everyone within 5 meters of hearing unlike the terms femboy, crossdresser, or tranvestite. When I crossdress, and I'm told that I'm sexy trap, what term should I give them instead? There's a lot of denial of speech but no suggestions for replacements.

You know why? Because regardless of what term is used, the people who think that they were tricked into sleeping with a "man" will still think that way. Upfront honesty ahead of time would have been better. Changing the language won't change the thought process. Changing the language of people who aren't trying to confront you are referring to people who aren't you, will not make the world a safer place for you. The only thing that will is if gender-queer actions and people are integrated and more accepted into society. Coming off as hyper-sensitive language-police does not help people accept you, it only creates tension.

Blaming this word which is used mostly by those in anime communities 90% of the time for fictional characters for the actions of violent sociopaths attacking transwomen is just ... but, maybe trap-loving weebs are the reason muscle-bound, bible thumping, ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ attack transwomen.

A lot of these don't list motives.

I wonder how it compares to gay and straight people murders, proportionally.
I'm not trying to start any trouble. You asked a question, and this is the answer from an actual trans person, take it or leave it.
Too many people just accept what some other voice on the internet or TV says without evidence. I think I'll wait till I see more evidence. Thank you for trying to answer though.

Sure, thanks for asking! The two biggest things are to avoid asking anything from before they transitioned, and make sure you us the proper pronouns. Most of the time people will clearly state their pronouns, for example mine are "she/her", but if not you can still figure it out pretty well. They always us the terms for what they are NOW, so a trans women isn't a woman who transitioned to male, it's a male who transitioned to a woman. More commonly though people will use terms like MTF (Male to female) to explain their gender. If you keep these things in mind, you'll be fine, but it's always alright to ask a question if you're not sure. (Most people would actually be happy to answer any questions you might have)

We're actually a very friendly community, so don't be afraid to ask any questions!
This is actually enough for now. Anyway, thanks!

Some small amount of ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ have used trap as a negative slur against trans women, but the main usage of trap has always been either crossdressing guys who pass as girls, or people who self identify as traps themselves. Very rare is the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ who goes around calling transgirls "traps" outside of those contexts

Yeah, it doesn't really apply unless you can find a chinpo under the skirt. You shouldn't assume identities that don't belong to you.

Traps aren't even trans, they're just cross dressers, so the whole controversy around it confuses me greatly. If you call anybody who's trans a "trap", you're very mistaken...

The claim here is that some idiots are twisting the term into a slur to make MTF trans people uncomfortable because they see them as delusional crossdressers.

It's kinda true if they don't have the surgery and seduce someone without telling them their sex.

The true definition of a trap is a man so beautiful they could pass for a sexy girl and seduce you. It's a compliment and that's how we use it.

We won't let anyone take a word from us just because some idiots might misuse it.

Here's the thing, me having a biological problem that makes it so that I can only really function with estrogen in my system has nothing to do with tricking men into sleeping with me. I don't trick anyone, I just exist. When people think that my existence is only to "trap" men, that's when men think it's ok to hurt us because they think we're out to hurt them. Terms like trap specifically continue to create a culture around the idea that if you were to run into one of us, we did that to you intentionally, which is almost never the case. That's what that word really does to us.

The rest of the trans community can get upset over a lot of dumb stuff because of their hyper sensitivity, but one of the few things I'll speak up on is the trap stuff because that actually affects us and our ability to socialize and be loved.

Trying to cancel out a word is ridiculous, but the okay-handsign thing was kinda funny.
