When to start collecting and completing side quests?

How far should I progress in the main story before I have everything I need to complete all the quests, buildings, upgrading outposts, etc.? I briefly read a walkthrough of the mechanics of the game and came across a bunch of stuff I have not encountered yet.

I'm the type of person that likes to complete as many side quests and optional objectives as possible before progressing through the story. I think that might be a bad idea for this game.
