This isnt an mmo i know but they sure are treating it like one. Feels like a cheap way to get more money out of an incomplete game.
Unfortunately, I do think this led to a worse game overall. More so because the "toys to life" experiment failed. This game would have been quite better if we secured new allies, ships, and weapons during the campaign, instead of paying real money for them.
BTW, it's fairly pay to win indeed. Ships serve as extra lives, pilots can unlock passive benefits for the whole crew, and mastering weapons is the fastest way to level up pilots and unlock those bonuses (not to mention that using the right weapon against each enemy makes the fights far easier). Playing with everything unlocked is a lot easier than sticking to just the base game.
