What does the tailor do?
I hired the tailor and I had to pay double the money every week, but as far as I can tell he didn't actually do anything after I hired him? What does he do? Did I just not find a menu or something?

I agree - I didn't see anything that he actually did (except adding to my household expenses that is.) The "doorman" and spymistress at least help you out at times.

I never had any dialogue with him the entire game. It may be a passive help (allows your outfits to lose novelty less quickly?), but I thought he said when you first hire him that he would help you modify outfits to make them more appealing to certain factions?

Maurice's main ability (other than some situational help he can provide in key incidents) is that he provides you with a discount a Le Petit Mogol. I'll add it to our to-do list that we should find a way to make his help more obvious.

He once helped me to sort out a rather "dangerous" dialogue during one of the party nights. I clearly wouldn't of passed the credibility checks and my peril levels weren't allowing me to pick the second option. So I trusted my guts and picked his third option, where he helped me acquire an Outrageous Gossip :) But that was just one direct encounter with Maurice. Probably there were more during the parties, but I just didn't approach the right people.

@Joy Manufacturing - it seems unfair that the description is that he will let you tailor your clothes however you like and make them novel again, but all he does is get you a discount on clothes and help you get outrageous gossip with at least one fashion related conversation. My first playthrough I was so confused looking for how to use this marvelous skill of his!

Frankly, the game's information sections are somewhat deficient. You can't even look up who you have hired and what they're costing you weekly, much less what they actually do for you. The entries in the Notables section of the journal don't tell you explicitly what faction the individuals belong to, how much favor you have with them, or even if any given person is alive or dead.

I've been hunting around the interface searching for how to use him to modify my outfits...
I guess that was misleading.

Sorry @Joy Manufacturing, I, too feel rather duped by Maurice's promises of active tailoring, only to find out (solely by leaving the game and coming here) that he is basically Amazon Prime: a recurring payment to save money at a particular retailer that you must patronize frequently enough to justify the cost of the service itself. Also a few odds and ends benefits on the side that you may or may not get the chance to use. And a difficulty cancelling.

I rather like Maurice so, rather than just being more honest about what he does, I think he could use a little buff. He promises to keep your dresses in fashion so perhaps have the novelty of your dresses degrade slower while he's in your employ. Maybe even have a little flyby notification when he helps like that, similar to the affection change ones. That way, you'd clearly see when he helps and how. Right now, since the prices of new dresses seem rather random, it's difficult to tell he's discounting them and so it's hard to tell he does anything at all. That only serves to help drive players to believe he has an active interface somewhere that we've missed.

So there's a handy way to solve both problems at once! I'm enjoying the game thus far otherwise so hopefully the feedback helps :cubehappy:

In that case can I suggest that you change the dialogue when you get the offer to hire him? The way he describes his services explicitly makes it sound like he would be able to restore novelty to clothes and change their attributes. (As I recall he even uses the term "novelty" which otherwise mostly refers to the game mechanic - and the discount thing is tossed in as an "oh, and I can even get you a discount!") Actually having that feature would be dope, but I get that that would be hard to implement, so an easier fix would be just changing that bit of dialogue?

If you did decide to add the feature I feel like it would work well as either a) a thing where you spend a day to have Maurice work on a garment and restore its novelty and/or boost one of its stats, or b) a passive bonus where he slows novelty decay and maybe adds a small bonus to the relevant stat for the party you're going to, with the in game explanation that he's making subtle alterations to fit the style preferences of that faction. I feel like either of those would make it feel a lot more worth the 40/week price.

This is a major issue for the game imo. For stat raisers to be fun you really need to be able to see all the stats and how you're affecting them with decisions etc.

Agree with all this - I kept thinking I must have missed something... and while I did still enjoy the game it was frustrating and a little strange that there were specific favor totals being accumulated somewhere that I could never see!
