I bought the game from a bargain bin like 10 years ago, it really surprised me when i played it:
- amazing 2D art, from characters portraits to fullscreen images showing important events. Terada Katsuya is an amazing artist very good for this kind of genre, pushing forward the art from the first japanese Wizardry titles in my opinion
- dungeons graphically more detailed than similar japanese titles (even for today, so many titles with quite basic rooms/tunnels, here it feels more an actual place, outside some floors more abstract designed)
- unsettling mood (you actually feel going around a dark place full of dangers) with some relaxing music in town here and there
- the story is paced with events happening in the dungeons and town with various NPCs (even with funny moments to break the tension)
- you have a combat system with actually animated 3D models that most of the time are similar to the actual 2D counterpart (if present of course)
- the RPG aspect is fairly decent (not too deep not too simple). Not too revolutionary but even not too standard
It's a bit slow (lots of dialogue, the combat system with 3D animations is really repeatitive) a speed/skip setting would help a lot. It's grindy/brutal but what japanese dungeon crawler isn't?
I played a little the sequel in Japanese too, a bit improved gameplay in a different place with not too different story idea behind. Being familiar with the first game, using Google Translator on smartphones to translate text and following the guide on Gamefaqs is a good way to play it without knowing the language.

I think these two games would find a place in the PC niche of first person dungeon crawlers because you see it's a work of love and improvement over the original formula. Bring widescreen, few new settings and improvements (ex. items in the inventory have not an icon but the "help" page shows that every item, not just for every type, has it's own 2D artwork. show them more :P) and i'd be happy.
I don't know if XSeed could actually deal with Atlus or the devs themselves to make a PC (or even Switch) port, i'd be really happy if these two games would have a wider audience and english translation of the sequel :)

I want the Wizardry Empire and Wizardry Gaiden games to get an official release. Beyond that I would kill for more Elminage games to get localized and developed.

At the recommendation of a local friend I played through Tales of the Forsaken Land earlier this year. No joke, I was quite surprised how much I enjoyed it, especially after playing Labyrinth of Lost Souls on PS3 a bit before.

Forsaken Land is awesome. Lost Souls ... not so much.

I will buy most and likely all Wizardry games that are re-launched for PC. Just saying: take my money!

Same here. Hell, I would support a Kickstarter if they wanted to remake the original serious for the modern age.

Hear, hear! Many of us were teenagers when we first played Wizardry games. Now we're older, balder, but (hopefully) with more money to spend!

Tales of the Forsaken Land was like a game from a totally different series, and yet still awesome.

Blackened Halo... Is that a Kamelot thing?

I played Tale of the Forsaken Land on PS2. Is this game just as good, or better? Is the combat similar, like with team actions and stuff?

Tale of the Forsaken Land was brutal. I remember getting ambushed by a large group of spiders, and even though my party was massively overleveled for that area, by like 15 levels higher, my entire party had their butt cheeks clapped by a 20+ spider rush attack, and I was at a reload screen. All the spiders combined their damage into a nuke AOE rush, it not only oneshotted my party, but some members got hit for enough damage to be OHKO'd 2 or 3x over by enemies 15 levels under them.

I eventually beat it though. it took some grinding, mostly to unlock the new party actions. I remember there was one that was OP as hell called "Ninja attack" and it used a ninja and a couple warriors to do a combo attack that hit for a near guaranteed deathblow, or a whole lot of damage.

Also, I remember you could combo spell with 2 mages, and this allowed you to do top tier nuke damage with lower tier spells with the combo cast, or rip an entire screen full of mobs with something like a jateal, instead of using megadeath. You won't get very far in this game if you don't abuse the hell out of the mage combo cast lower level nukes. Random groups of mobs could gut your party quite easily, especially large quantities of the same enemy, or a large group of ninja + samurais who have like a 10% chance to OHKO you with lethal blow from a ninja star or katana. You had a revive spell, but outside of the absolute top tier level of spells, it had a chance to fail and turn your character into a pile of ashes. So dead character basically = you're reloading your last save if you get unlucky on a revive roll. Which seemed to happen more often than not.

All here for any Wizardry games!! I saw a play through of Tales of the forsaken lands on youtube, on a PS2 in English and it really looked good. It would be great to have it here too!!

Tale of the Forsaken Land plays perfectly on PCSX2. It'll run on a potato.

Yeah but a proper port with widescreen support, higher resolution (even for font) and so on could be a good thing, maybe even making them translate the sequel if it sells well.

Though it was certainly different than the main Wizardry titles, it was nothing short of a fantastic RPG and one of my top favorite dungeon crawlers. The Allied Actions system still stands as the most fun and interesting way to coordinate party attacks and broaden the effectiveness of your back row party members. I also enjoyed the more lighthearted moments with reoccurring NPC's, as well as the occasional interactions between the pre-made party members. It really helps to breathe more life into the game without me having to fill that void with my imagination.

If it did get to see the light of day again, be it a Steam port or a polished PS2 Classic on the PS4, I'd be down to buy it once more for the conveniences, HD presentation, and to enjoy an overall great game.

Not gonna lie, I enjoyed Tale of the Forsaken Land more than the official Wizardry games, just overtaking Wizardry V as my favourite. That being said, I hope this port leads to more of the japanese wizardry games coming westward finally.
