You don't need Gamespy to play the game. Unless you want to play in multiplayer, of course.
You DON'T need to have Gamespy running to play the game in Single Player.
The game works well for some people, but it indeed works like crap (or doesn't work at all) for most people.
You have two choices: fix the game yourself or ask for a refund.
Since you clearly have no patience, I recommend the later.
I played this game for more than 70 hours, and it is one of my favorite games ever. But believe me: it took me LOTS of work just to make the game playable...
