SR 2 Crashes at start up
I run an AMD FX 8350 with an ASUS Geforce GTX 660 and 8 GB DDR 3 RAM. As well as Windows 8 64 bit. I have never had an issue with games before, especially SR 2 however when I recently installed SR 2 on this build, the game simply crashes before it can even show the menu. I assume it's a resolution error but I'm not 100% sure. Also, installing GOTR did nothing to fix this either. Help would be much appraciated.

I also forgot to mention that reinstalling didn't fix this, and when I try to verify the game data it tells me to stop running any games or tools. However after checking my task manager there are none running that are associated with SR 2.:DJSkully:

The SR2 PC FAQ has multiple troubleshooting steps you can try for that issue:

Much appreciated, I also contacted the deep silver/ voltion tech support.

Both those companies did not handle the PC port. It was Outsourced.

Check this thread: http://steamcommunity.com/app/9480/discussions/0/846958724811426425/

Also check out that FAQ guide that Idol Ninja posted. Very helpful. He is the dude that has kept Saints Row 2 alive and playable.

I updated my bios, and that didn't fix it. I still can't verify my game cache at all. It still will not boot at all.

Try Disabling display scaling on high DPI settings.

Jump in \Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\Saints Row 2

Find SR2_pc.exe and right click on it then goto Properties now click on the Compatibility tab and check Disable display scaling on high DPI settings and click Apply and OK.

Windows 8 automatically sets Compatibility settings for programs and games so it set that for this game. So it might be needed and it might not.

Try deleting the setting.bat file. Located C:\Users\"Windows user name"\AppData\Local\THQ\Saints Row 2\settings.dat

What resolution you playing at? Could try: http://idolninja.saintsrowmods.com/sr2/tools/gibbedsaintsrow2resolution.zip

All else fails. Look & ask here: http://www.saintsrowmods.com/forum/forums/get-help-troubleshooting.33/

Don't give up yet.

Was this a fresh download & install?

If you can't Verify integrity of game cache. Sounds like a bad install.

Uninstall in Steam then go in SteamApps & Common & delete Saints Row 2 folder.

Now go in the Users\"Windows user name"\AppData\Local and delete the THQ folder.

Steam backups saves online. Right click on Saints Row 2 in Steam, goto Properties. Then click on Updates then untick Enable Steam Cloud synchronization.

Install game then GotR & Powertools if needed(install unless CPU is 3.2GHZ. There is two versions of PT. Check my thread for more info).

Then exit game & re-enable Steam Cloud.

Can you tell us the exact error and or post a screenshot? I highly suggest you ask in the SR2 help section at SaintsRowMods.com that I linked above.

Good luck!

While attempting to start the game again to get the exact error message the game actually run. So thanks for all the help, I'm glad my game can work again!

K. So you're using GotR. What about Power Tools?

Check the guide I whipped up for additional tips.

Turn off some of the crap visual fluff and add some SweetFX: http://steamcommunity.com/app/9480/discussions/0/846959876010842574/

Keep tabs on the Mod Release & progress section at the SaintsRowMods.com site. Good stuff is coming.

I wouldn't bother with co-op with a stranger. Find a buddy and use the same mods and have a blast! :D

Make a thread here and ask for someone else who has the game with GotR and or join the GotR steam group: http://steamcommunity.com/groups/gentlemenoftherow

Use Steam voice chat or Skype.

Throw IdolNinja a thanks too.
