that is if you don't want to emulate sr1 on xenia for the beginning of it all
First game isn't on PC, you'll have to get a 360 copy.
Second game is by far the best in the series but the PC port is garbage, there was a patch being worked on by the community manager at the time IdolNinja but he passed away and though Deep Silver and Volition claimed they were continuing to work on it it's been multiple years with no updates, it's clear to see they've lied about finishing a dead man's dream. If you want to play SR2 without it being glitchy and terrible you'll need to buy it for the 360.
Third game is okay, it's probably the second best of the easily available games but it lost the tone of the first and second game instead going for nonstop potty humor and streamlined (AKA removed) a lot of things that SR2 had. It isn't terrible just overall mediocre.
Fourth game went off the rails and is basically Crackdown except you play as a criminal with superpowers instead of a cop, potty humor remains but there's really no point in customizing cars or guns like you used to because half the time you can just kill stuff with your super powers now.
Saints Row 2022 was laughably bad and was actually so bad that Volition isn't even allowed to make its own games anymore and they've been consumed into Gearbox.
If you really want to play SR and you own an Xbox360 get 2 on there, it's the best one by far but completely broken on PC. If you don't own that console you can get 3 and maybe 4 on Steam, they aren't SR at its best but they're fun enough. Other than that don't bother.

SR3 & 4 got remastered.
SR1-4, GAT 360 are all playable on xbox one and later.
The best way to play now is an original SR2 disc on an Xbox Series X. It's natively upscaled to 4k and runs amazing.
If you want to heavily mod it/play with friends on co-op (because I don't believe Xenia supports LAN or anything and buying a console for one game is a bit much), then I'd say buy it and install the Gentlemen Of The Row mod and you can play with your friends with methods like Radmin or Hamachi. It's an amazing game, but the PC port even with mod fixes has a lot of trouble running properly and the way Volition has been recently (with public appearances, company buyouts, and their coding "skills") I doubt we're gonna see that SR2 patch anytime soon, if at all.
I would also like to point out that using an Xbone to play the game can have issues with framerate dips in water sections.
If companies need to keep being ground into dust or hemorrhaging record profits in order to get the point, then so be it. In general, the lesson is clear: keep your messaging out of your product, do not alienate your original fans and if you have a winning formula, don't fix what's not broken. Failure to learn this lesson will simply result in more of the same.
The free market always wins in the end. RIP Volition/Deep Silver/anyone else associated with this travesty, your demise was utterly predictable and wholly deserved.
EDIT: Oh, and in case it wasn't clear from the absolute abundance of forum posts bemoaning the complete lack of basic functionality in this game, do not buy OP. It is a literal scam in its current state.
