Note without GotR the buttons will display as generic number buttons. Kind of like the ones found on older logitech brand controller. However with GotR it will allow you to change the button display to look like the ones on the xbox 360.
To make it easier I will give a list of the pad button numbers, and the xbox 360 equivalent buttons. This way you can rebind the buttons in game, and know what buttons you picked.
1 = X
2 = A
3 = B
4 = Y
5 = LB
6 = RB
7 = LT
8 = RT
9 = Back
10 = Start
11 = Pressing L Analog
12 = Pressing R Analog
Steam also has this built in now: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EFM9lWbfpQ4
(Video is from when it was in beta but now is included in non-beta Steam.)
For people new to using Steam's built in Controller configurer:
1. In Steam Desktop go in settings and click In-Game and tick Use the Big Picture Overlay when using a Steam Controller from the Desktop. Then click OK.
2. Go into Big Picture Mode. Click the controller icon on the top right on Steam Desktop.
3. Click the Gear. Make sure Controller/s are on.
Optionally goto Interface and turn down ambient and navigation sounds.
4. Goto Controller Settings. Tick the Controller types you own (PS4/Xbox/Generic). Then restart Steam
Personal preference but untick Guide Button Focuses Steam if you don't want that function.
Optionally setup Base Configurations like Desktop Configuration if you want to use the Controller as a Mouse in Desktop. Chord if you need Mouse function for certain menus / Media Functions. While holding down the Controller logo button. Cool stuff.
5.Make sure Controller is on. Three ways to mess with your Controller settings.
Either right click the game in Desktop mode and select Edit Steam Controller Configuration.
Or go into Big Picture and Select the game, manage game and Controller Configuration.
You can also do this in game by pressing the logo button on your Controller too. Which opens the Steam Overlay. If you need to do any further tweaking.
Hope this was useful.
I'm working on some new video guides to better help since the pinned guide is kinda a glob of text so I will be sure to do a video on controls too.
