If you speak Mandarin and like your Silk Road history, this is a pretty good short historical experience, and well worth the free price of admission. If you don't care about the history, there's probably not much here for you. I did not experience significant lag.
The details of the historic cave are quite high resolution, good enough to read tiny inscriptions and notice intricate details of daily life thousands of years ago captured in the frescoes. The audio/video guides are a bit gimmicky but okay, and the interface took me a few minutes to figure out, but was acceptable.
Actually, in some ways, this compares favorably to my visit to the actual cave in person: you can take your own tour, get as close as you want to the frescoes, and even teleport up to the ceiling to check out things you could never see in person. There are no tour guides urging you along, tour groups swarming in to fill up every inch of roped off space; no one's smoking or trying to sneak illicit selfies or having loud intimate cell phone conversations in your ear. And it's a whole lot cheaper than a couple of plane tickets and an overpriced entrance fee.

Didn't understand anything being said in the game, but for just a room you could walk around in, it was quite a nice experience. Very peaceful.

This is a free VR experience that is in Chinese only. It worked on my HTC Vive system, looked ok, played ok, sounded ok, was not understandable. You are exploring a real cave with murals. There are 3 hotspots to find with your flashlights, point your laser pointer at spot for a few seconds to start the presentations. Use your trackpad button when the audio presentation has finished, to go back to search mode. The textures and modelling look ok. The audio voiceovers are done with a female Chinese narrator. This is a short ten minute experience. There is no VR movement mode, except where it places you to watch the three hotspot presentations.

Try this only, if you understand Chinese and interested in Chinese history.

Somewhat muddy from a visual perspective, but I suppose that's because this struture is over 1600 years old. I wonder if it looked like this back in the day, or it was more vibrant. How good was their paint? Did they eat it when it crusted and fell off the fresco walls? In any event, we hope you enjoy your stay at Dunhuang Cave No 61. This app has store avatar, and it's pretty good.

I'll never get to go over seas to see something like this in person. Being able to do this in VR allows me to appreciate this more than seeing it on a flat screen. Thank You

This is a nice app - even if you do not understand the language it's very easy to enter the cave. Graphics are nice, and you do get to explore Mogao cave 61 - which may be close to impossible in the real world.

I was fascinated by the art, is this China's Sistine Chapel? :)

It seems you may need Index or Vive for this app, it worked great using the Index.
