How do the Essence Gnomes work?

As the title stated. Do they just increase the drop rate or quantity dropped on purple glowing mobs?

in soda dungeon 1, each gnome added +5% of your total collected essence at the end of the run. it works the same way in soda dungeon 2, but i don't know if the devs changed the percentage.
