Which version of Dawn of war should I get?

Lately I have decided I wanted to try out dawn of war 1 and so when I check steam I see that there is four versions of it, which version should I get and what is the diffrence between each?

for campaign you can play the gold edition, winter assault and dark crusade. for multiplayer you can play soulstorm since most of the community is there. the soulstorm campaign is not very good, so i dont think you will enjoy it. my personal favourite is winter assault' campaign

Wait for a sale and buy the Master Collection, which includes all four.

soulstorm has all the races. I think there's a mod for soulstorm to play all the campaigns. plus, you need soulstorm to play all the bigger mods, such as unification and apocalypse.

I would just get soulstorm for £3 when on sale and then you get all the mods and all the races in offline skirmish. If playing online against people you probably want master collection.

Both DC and SS have bad campaigns, tepid total war clone but worse. Dow1 has a short narrative campaign that starts there and continues in dow 2 retribution. Winter assault has probably the best campaign.

bad campaigns? i respectfully and forcefully disagree with that statement.

That is your prerogative, but skirmishes with a half baked risk component is much, much worse than where we were going with WA.

I highly recommand starting by playing camapaigns in base game then some skirmish games untill you get bored then go to 1st expansion and repeat process. Later do the same with 2nd expansion which is considered to be "golden age" of DoW1. Latest expansion (Soulstorm) were released bugged and crashy but true horror is that even without them it had bad camapign and also I feel like adding more factions kind of killed flavour of earlier armies as no matter who you play in SS there is at least one faction which is similar to yours. Its not true fault of devs as its practically impossible to keep adding new functional stuff which is completely uniue but you know it kind of hurt me personally. Still I guess its worth of playing few skirmishes of SS. Before moving to one of two or three big mods.

Buy the Master Collection when it's on sale in order to unlock all of the playable factions in multiplayer. You should play Soulstom for multiplayer and mods, and Dawn of War, Winter Assault and Dark Crusade for singleplayer.

Regarding the Soulstorm multiplayer:

Dawn of War base game unlocks the Space Marines, Chaos, Eldar and Orks.

Winter Assault unlocks the Imperial Guard.

Dark Crusade unlocks the Necrons and Tau Empire.

Soulstom unlocks the Sisters of Battle and Dark Eldar.

Dark Crusade. It takes the rpg aspects of DOW/Winter Assault's campaigns and amplifies them a lot. The Pavonis mission for example is about rescuing some robot androids lost around the map, i dont remember if you can defeat it by playing the standard "RTS" way (I think opponents start on T4 or something?) anyways, DC is pretty fun for single player purposes

I made that map for SS, probably end up in the unification campaign at some point.

If you like to play skirmish against the computer like I do, Soulstorm. It has everything from all the rest. War never ends in Soulstorm. Been playing that forever. My favorite RTS of all time and nothing comes close.
