Returned Player Grey Knights Question
Hello, I played Dawn of War through Winter Assault for Years as Space Marines.

I got some bundle deal on steam that gave me all the DLC.

Grey Knights look awesome. I just wanted to know what role they have?

So far, for me, they are just an intermediate unit melee unit that bridges the gap between assault marines and Assault Terminators because you get them by Tier 2.

Is there more to it then that?

Also, I find late game, that they have far less utility in Tier 3 because I am mostly stacking marine squads and two terminator squads.

They look amazing though.

They play big role in multiplayer, where going Grey Knights + Chaplain instead of giant Mechanicus pizza is a part of alternative build order. In single player, you can use them to fight things like Bloodthirster and Avatar of Khein. Or Living Saint :steamhappy:

I know they are extremely good versus deamons. Against Tau, Orks, Imperial Guard, most Eldar and Space Marines, I don't get much juice after Tier 2.

In multiplayer, I could totally understand rushing them out and curb stomping.

In the single player campaign, unless deamons involved, I only get temporary value.

Yes, I attach Force Commander or Chaplain to them and it works very well. Librarian attachment is actually my favorite because of how I micro the squad.

If you play vanilla game, even hard difficulty, AI is so bad you don't get a chance to utilize units, such as Grey Knights properly. They are melee specialist with a charge which helps you dealing with factions which outgun spacemarines in range weapons, like Tau or Imperial Guard. But base game AI won't even start retreating when his long range specialists got in combat with your assault marines. If you don't mind a challenge, try this mod:

P.S.: I speak of hard difficulty as default, because even on normal, your units have 2x HP boost so it kinda doesn't matter.

I'll try using them the way you said. They are some of the coolest looking units that I have ever seen.

I wish they put them in Dawn of War 2.

I could bore you with the lore of 40K but Grey Knights are basically daemon hunters with psyker powers

I know the lore, that's what got me into Dawn of War. It was the lore first.

I like how some of the first grey knights came from loyalist survivors from traitor legions.

I wish they developed the rumor that the blood ravens gene seed is from magnus.

It's too bad Dawn didn't allow us to experience other space marine chapters. The grey knights were a nice touch, but I would have loved if there were DLCs that gave Blood Angels, Etc.

In Dawn of War 2 they did a good job with Chaos undivided and gave us noise marines, death guard, and different champions affiliated with different gods. I know from a lore perspective they couldn't do that with space marines because they typically don't fight together.
