What 'mode' or system do people use to play multiplayer?

I'm new to DoW, beat the campaign of the base game recently and started the winter assault campaign.

I wanted to try out some online matches, since soulstorm still has a community. What mod or ladder do people use to play mainly? I'd probably want to start playing casually online, maybe 2v2, 3v3 4v4 or against AI.

Un-modded Soulstorm has an active multiplayer community. I believe it’s more active than any other dow game or mod. Just go to Multiplayer and hit join game. But a lot of games are pvp, no AI involved. Still you should probably be able to join or make a game vs AI in un-modded Soulstorm, I see those too.

I think mod players (Ultimate Apocalypse and Unification Mod) do a lot of matches against AI, if that’s specifically what you’re looking for. I don’t actually play those mods though, so I don’t know how many game lobbies are normally up.

If you’re gonna be playing multiplayer, I can’t recommend this enough, seriously. I know it can be a hassle to install mods and stuff but the default field of view in this game is absolutely criminal. This won’t affect your ability to play with players who don’t have it, either.

Oh, okay thanks for all the info. And I actually already have the camera mod installed on all DoW 1 games :D One question though, why did I hear a lot of people saying 'soulstorm is so unbalanced' - is it really that bad or just people complaining?

I'm not sure what others meant, but 9 unique factions (36 1v1 matchups) is a lot. When you have so many elements, not every matchup is perfectly balanced, I suppose.

These are stats taken from a community site, and they don't reflect every soulstorm game ever played, but they do give some idea of the situation.

Thanks. I've wanted to start with orc. Only really played space marines and a bit of winter assault order races.

Orc looks fun, I tried a game I found in the lobby browser to do 1v1 and lost of course.

Do people ever use the matchmaking? I would think that's ideal. It just didnt seem to find a match for me though.

Basically no one uses the matchmaking system.

Thank you. So then what do people use to play then, just the online browser? Also, how do they keep track of ranks and other things without matchmaking?

Ugh where are all the people? I look at the in-game browser, and sure there are matches, but not that many maybe like 4-6 matches that aren't locked via password and none of them speak english, nor friendly.

Steam charts says 1100 concurrent players right now, where are all these players?
