Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War - Soulstorm

Ork unit composition?
So to start, let me say I'm new to the game but not to RTS. I'm high masters/low GM on SCII, and a prominent player in several other RTS games, so micro isn't my issue (Unless I'm missing something).

My build order is typically slugga, gretchin, slugga, getting waaaaaagh towers, power generators, and listening posts asap. Reinforcing the slugga squads as I go to increase ork resource.

I'm finding that everybody else seems to have starting units that stack up much better against my standing army. Should not be reinforcing the sluggas? If not, how do I get population for tech?

Any other basic suggestions?

Thanks

The general build order for Orks is:
Barracks -> Generator or Waaaagh Banner
Depends on match-up

Unit order from HQ:
Slugga -> Slugga -> Gretchin

Unit order from Barracks:
Shoota -> Big Mek
or
Big Mek -> Shoota
Again depends on match-up

If you want to reinforce sluggas, you can do, but most save resources to go for big shoota mass on shoota boys, and just use sluggas for capping, decapping, typing up enemy units in close combat

Sluggas should obviously be used in close combat, and only lose to Mandrakes and Necron Warriors in the early game

Against Tau it is neutral, because they can kill stealth suits easily, but that requires detection and stealth suits can jump.

Usually with Orks me personally always go for gretchin,slugga,slugga ->your first builder that comes out straight for gen,while the starting one for barracks. Big mek + Shoota squad...

play smart early get Pile'o Gunz Shoota boyz upgrade + Armor

Im talking from straight experience here,If its 1v1 Should be an easy game for you
I dont like reinforcing sluggas,I use them for recaping stuff,or going melee when needed!
hopefully I helped you

How do you guys deal with the low pop then? Since I need pop just to get the Pile of Gunz

I was gonna type up a huge comment, then decided against it, there's a difference between telling people how to play and actually showing them how it is done, because one is just talk and the other is practical.

This guy uploads tons of DoW replays look for replays that feature Orks, and then see how those players attack, defend, tech, etc.

I suggest you to watch video above that another man put up,this youtuber is primary focused on Soulstorm - He is very experienced in the game and knows what he talks about. Its kinda hard for me to tell you when to build waaagh banners!

I appreciate both. The above comments helped a lot, I'm fairly good with strategy and micro management. I've been winning most my 1v1 matchups, and some FFA/Team games with those tips. Though there's still a lot for me to learn. I'm trying to master wartruck micro currently.

Do you know if gretchins/other builders build stuff faster if they are reinforced? Or if squads capture faster if they are reinforced? I couldn't find info on build times/capture times from squad sizes anywhere.
Renfrew Jun 21, 2020 @ 9:53am
For all races the build speed is increased by 50% if there are two builders, which is 150% build rate total = 75% from each builder, which decreases construction time by 33% (on a minor note for Chaos the build rate is 450% if two heretics use force build), however this bonus is based on each builder unit not builder squad . This means that for Orks and Necrons having multiple squads build the same thing is actually bad, and reinforcing them beyond 2 just increases their survivability, and has no effect on boosting build rate. They are better off building something else, or being in position ready to build something, or in the case of Necrons they should also be used for capturing points if they are not needed near the Monolith.

Capture and decapture times for SPs, Relics, and CLs is capped depending on the specific unit, reinforcing has no effect.

There is a wiki, with lots of information here:

1st and foremost LPS (LIstening Posts) are the economy, so having lps is your main focus in the game. try playing the campaign a little it will help you with getting a "feel" for the game. Also energy is valuable mostly on t2 onwards, t1 generally doesnt require much power. Also the commander is very important for Orks.

I'm not an ork player. The Ork is one of the races that takes the longest time to learn and understand in my opinion. As an ork player you just have so many different units and upgrades that it can take a while to learn everything and every viable strategy. If youre just trying to familiarize yourself with the game, a race like the SM or Tau, that have immediately strong durability + firepower + all around units and simple research trees can get you hooked better...

Also if you play spamming sluggas you're gonna get upset quickly cause they're weak starting units and have very specific purposes (such as entangling the opponent ranged units, and maybe taking down an unupgraded listening post or generator with their flamethrowers). You need Pile O Guns always and you will rely on Big SHootas and stormboys, but usually rushing for vehicles can be good too. Slugga is always at supporting role at most unless opponent is really weak, like an Easy comp or something. Even then your building damage with unupgraded slugga is so low it will take forever to take down a headquarters.
