In the older versions, it randomly crashed on me and quit to desktop, but i started using the LAA patch and solved all the problems. Never had a crash anymore since then. The patch increases the ammount of ram allocation soulstorm can use.

Liked the idea but sadly it didn't fix it, the game doesn't crash when the sound dies, it crashes on victory or attempting to quit out of the game (whether that's back to desktop or menu).
I've been having an issue for sometime now where it's almost like my sound driver/card resets. Sound disappears for a second or two but then comes back. I've checked for updates on the drivers, they're all up to date, I can't work out what the problem is.
I think i had this problem happening to me (sound disapearing) only once. I never had again because i lowered the volume in the game settings.
I'm not an expert or anything, but i think the game sound is usually set to too loud and that might overwhelm the sound card, making it reset (i'm pretty sure they have this safety feature to prevent them from burning due to excessive amount of energy passing through.)
I use a pc amplifier for another needs and it does the same thing to my sound card if i amp too much.
Lower all the in-game volumes to half or less. It worked for me as well.
