Depends on your playstyle, but the general consensus is that Tau and Eldar are the strongest. However, they do require a good amount of skill (especially with micro) to get the best out of them. Your best bet would be to start with Space Marines to learn the basics before moving on to a faction that suits you personally.

Space Marines are the easiest to start with, from there you can pretty much branch out to the others relatively easy once you learn the game mechanics and know what you're doing. Each faction has somewhat of a different playstyle so they'll all take some getting used to.

if you want to just provide support i think the imperial guard is the best. you can do considerable damage by putting artillery behind the main force and blasting the enemies into space (Note: the artillery is the basilisk)
I'll do a writeup tomorrow, for now have this link:

Also, what's your fav race to play?

Easiest one: Space Marines

You have lots of options: Spam Land Speeder Tempests with AV (Anti-Vehicle) upgrade, sniper scouts, plasma scouts, Grey Knights + Chaplain, Terminators, Land Raiders. I mean they don't have any junk unit.

Hardest one: Dark Eldar

On the other hand, Dark Eldar have a few junk units. You'll never see Raider, Talos, Warriors etc in a team game for a reason. Raider is just outright junk compared to its counterparts. Talos has serious pathfinding issues, Warriors will become obsolete once you hit tier 2, thus rendering the Kabalite Armour upgrade literally useless and waste of resources as well. If you're going to play this race, either get Hall of Blood or Dark Foundry. Most of the newbies of this race make the mistake of building both at once. This will painfully cost you a game. Either go for the Reaver Jetbikes of Dark Foundry build order, or Hall of Blood plus Mandrakes and Archon. Keep in mind that Mandrakes (your starting unit) have a good anti-building damage, so use them to destroy plasma generators.

Generally, your main army should be comprised of Wyches, Warp Beasts and a fully upgraded Archon, and perhaps a Haemonculus. Use Ravager's awesome ability against large chunks of infantry such as Fire Warrior spam or Flash Gitz. Don't neglect your Soul Powers. Raven is a great unit due to its sabotage ability. Use it on certain units such as Baneblade, Land Raider etc.

Side note: Never frigging use your recharge Soul Power on Wyches since doing so will disable the combat drugs of the target unit. This is one of the most annoying bugs along with the Living Saint Resurrection bug. Instead, use your recharge ability on Archon, so you will get to stun your enemies for four times.

The deal with "beginners should play marine races" is that they should also be warned not to overspend on marines, because that way they'll be in tier 1.5 while everyone else is in tier 3 and has Terminators/Kasrkin/Obliterators etc that can shred the basic CSM/Tacs -- so as long as you do that, you'll be fine. Chaos is also quite good in teamgames since defliers on ranged stance can shred things really well (they are a artillery unit masquarading as a melee walker).

It's slightly different for 2v2 and for 3v3/4v4. 2v2 is more "balanced". Most races have some cheeky (and downright scummy) strategies that they can pull off in 3v3/4v4 games that they can't in 1v1 or 2v2. Certain features that are handy in the former (space marines spamming dreads and dropping them on top of the enemy base after they get the Land Raider) become op in 3v3/4v4.

Really, all of the races except the Dark Eldar are capable of doing great in 3v3 and 4v4. It takes a very exceptional DE to carry the team or even just not be dead weight for most of the match. Orks are kinda worse than in 1v1/2v2 since their buildings are so easy to wreck and they are very requisiton hungry, but since all of their units are really good it balances out.
