Having difficulties playing Imperial Guard against Tau
Does anyone have any strategies for fighting Tau with Imperial Guard? It feels ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ impossible when hammerheads are constantly chewing up my dudes and the only ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ detector I have is the psyker, which dies basically instantly and can't be infiltrated itself like the skull probe.
Also I'm playing in Ultimate Apocalypse so strateges for vanilla soulstorm may only apply to an extent

emm turtle rush to get baneblade? as for the detector use the radar thing from the base, you will likely need multiple base anyway so that you can get pleanty of the op ig turrets for your turtling and base is also a good place to bunker your troop as it can take lots of punishment...

Alright. Thanks
The IG are great at spamming artillery, especially so in UA. Turrets in UA can be upgraded to provide a huge vision bonus at the cost of removing the weapons. With this you can just turtle with regular and anti-vehicle turrets for defense and tower rush them with IG's artillery structure, using those weaponless turrets for vision.

You can either keep up the tower rush until you control the entire map or use the free time to build a strong army. Medusas and Basilisks synergize extremely well with this strategy.

altho in UA the Tau get massive arty guns as well tho in the form of their superweapon turtling too long will kill you too.

the turret upgrade that gives it a radar is great to hold the line
should have 1 of those for every defencive line
in UA every unit also has some detection range, usually a very short range but its some
so if you really cant get a psycher close enough tell some conscripts to hug them
once they trip over the stealth enemy they can spot them

seeing as in current patch tau is getting to new levels of underpowered, your only real threat is maybe tau fire warriors and shasvas elites. the arty is a decent issue but your t4 walls outrange it with weapon upgrade and you also have a better t0 then tau due to rough riders since shapers were nerfed. idk why invis is a huge issue but sentinel walkers can also detect in UA.
Getting sentinels and upgrading them with detectors and armor is a pain in the ass in the first place. Then they get broadsides online and my sentinels are effectively useless even when i spam the ♥♥♥♥ out of them. The bit that's really hard about using Sents is that they die almost instantaneuously.
broadsides area issue but try using stun nades on them.
rough riders are your friend in this match up since you need to melee them as quickly as possible
can even send conscripts to melee and meatshield if required
focus on taking out any power gens of tau as well in harassment since the faction is extremely power hungry the broadsides cost like 200 power almost im pretty sure

in a bot game yeah this works but PvP Tau have formidable not as energy hungry kroot which are mostly mellee only. If you were to defeat a player who knows how to play tau then I suggest using a somesort of meat shield to distract them. lets say conscripts or ur regular imperial gaurdsmen and then have tanks in the back to deal the damage. Rough Riders fit the bill as well but they are quite a costly unit to sacrifice.

Also if we are talking vanilla the tau have barely any defensive structures they rely on broadsides to do the defensive work which is a massive disadvantage as that eats into the unit cap quite a bit. Make sure you force the Tau into defense by flanking and attacking their base as Archeon said, that way they would need to invest unit points in defending the base making their attacks weaker and smaller.
The Tau in this situation can still get out of it by having large amounts of stealth recon patrolling the map and eliminating the harrass attacks using cloaked vehicles and units. Always bring stealth detection units as a rule of thumb.
