Can you tell me what you mean by the star? You mean the crystals on the floor? If yes, these unlock when you get the teleport spell later in the game.
The ray works between you and the target and goes a little bit more after that target.
We design the PUSH/PULL that way to make it interesting. Because having a spell that just push and pull without causing any damage could have been boring.
There seems to be two types of crystals on the floor? One that builds a bridge, and one that teleports you. However, right now there's no lead up to either of them working so I have no idea how to unlock the teleport or even unlock the first one.
Definitely the PUSH/PULL is great doing damage! I just didn't realize it until my second restart, and then only by accident. I was thinking perhaps having a way to integrate that explanation into the game could be helpful.
I see what you mean for the Crystal. The teleport ones can only be activated by getting the teleport "spell" late in the game. They are there for backtracking and to access to new biomes.
