The written NPCs are mostly just limited by the type of act animation they have and if the genitalia match, e.g. Spirit's act is MxM because it is anal with player doing it, so it basically basically requires player to have a penis for it, with exception of Kess and Horveek who look into specific parts character has (namely specific size of breasts, but neither is locked based on it and rather just has additional dialogue depending on it) ^^
Can you describe the issue further? Is the cause of issue more related to lack of characters that "bang both ways", or more towards lack of MxM and FxF acts? We're generally trying to have about the same amount of MxF, MxM, and FxF acts, but there definitely happens an automatic bias to it because MxF type of acts require acts where F is with M character, and also acts where M is with F character, so effectively to ensure there's enough mix and match we need to have MxF, FxM, MxM, and FxF acts.
I do wish we could just flip a switch to have NPC swing both ways act wise, but sadly animations have to be created manually, so basically our "grand plan" is to have only the Major NPCs (like Horveek, Cook Pinch, Bosun Dhax, etc) have multiple animations, and otherwise focus on having as many unique NPCs as possible to meet, many of them with an unique full act too but that means they generally won't have act available to both M and F ^^
In the animations with wild bred, there's actually an issue we've had for a long while and only recently noticed, and it's that the animations aren't properly spaced out, so it looks like there's only a few MxM animations with minor crew. Looking at our animation list almost 50% of crew animations are available with MxM combination. You can "temporarily" increase the variation by basically disabling the type of animations you're not currently looking for, and then switching it in options when you want the other type to appear. Not optimal, but a workaround for now ^^'
It depends on what the sex means in the game as a mechanic.
If its there just for entertainment, than it's the lack of MxM and FxF acts for both wild bred and NPC's, which is completely understandable as this is still an alpha. You could also look at it in terms of lacking more 'giving' and/or 'receiving'; such as the Bosun only giving, or the spirit only receiving, as an example.
This would solve itself overtime as you add more and more.
If you're planning for the sex to be more inclusive in the game, such as another form of currency or a means of influencing game decisions, than it would be the lack of characters bisexuality or pragmatism towards it.
The admiral is a good example of this idea. While his preference is towards vaginal characters, the way his personality is and how his guards act, there's a hint that he's not above dominating more submissive males.
You could play into that. Where players with male characters can still unlock the basic scene with Horveek through flirting with him from the start, but as a consequence, they lose Horveek's respect and can't progress further with Horveek as an important NPC.
While players with female characters have the same choice, but because of Horveek's preference for females, they would have a path of redemption and keep progressing through Horveek as an important NPC.
The latter idea would make the characters a little less like showpieces and more like influential characters that affect the player's overall roleplay with their character.
