The night is dark and full of terrors, thanks for the suggestion! As a temporary solution - perhaps adjusting brightness settings will help?
It's really annoying and makes me not want to play anymore.
I am having the same issue. It was not a problem the last time I played (before 1.1). Changing shadows has no effect.
I have a nVidia card, in case that information is required.
It only slows me down until it gets scary dark, which really doesn't last that long.
Maybe what we need are tasks we can do at home, during nightfall or placeable lanterns.

Reminds me of how one of the most popular mods for Skyrim were lanterns that could be equipped in a belt slot. There were a couple different ideas of how to fuel them, but it reflected the same desire of having a hands-free light source.
Utter blackness--not so much.
Sleeping allows you to set the time you want. For example, if it it starts getting dark, you can go to the bed and set the time back to daytime. You can change weather as well.
