This question came up during the development, and we have thought about it a lot, however since our key goal is to preserve and revive the original gameplay experience, we chose to be very careful with any changes that could affect the core gameplay.
Sadly without AI and Steam friends with same game,
you will be than only able to play story.
Better to make sure that all potentially interested players know about the game. SWINE is really not well known but the genre is.
Post in the steam forums of similar games and let friends and mates know.
I'll be playing it online for sure.
Would it be possible to implement the Steam matchmaking and lobby system for the remaster so that people could join automatches if they don't have friends who are interested in the game?
I'm sure you could find a way to add things so they don't take away anything from the original feeling. A selectable AI to hold skirmishes against would be such an option. Post-game content (like having a bigger selection of units in story mode) would be another. Maybe you could re-play the story with all your ranked up units and money, in a kind of "New Game +" mode which is popular in role playing games.
I do admit I never managed to finish the original title though (I was young and this game was significantly more difficult than other RTS games like Command & Conquer), so I don't know what, if any, stuff the game grants you after finishing it.
C&C is also getting a full remake soon by the way, and by the original company who made it (not sure if their talents are the same too, but at least the music guy is back on board, he even had a live concert of C&C music last month - if you know the music in those games, you understand why this is a big deal).
Looks like this year will be a great time for RTS games.
I agree with this post. Adding things like AI opposition to MP wouldn'T have altered the experience in any way, but would have opened it up for filthy casuals like me. I played the campaign to death in the original game, but wasn't (and probably still ain't) suited for multiplayer, however I like kicking the AI to death in other games.
Summary: We're running out of money. Give us more. Don't expect us to work for it.
