Stranded Sails - Explorers of the Cursed Islands

Stranded Sails - Explorers of the Cursed Islands

Discovering recipies
So I'm trying to discover new recipes, but the clues keep changing. I put in ingredients and get one green check mark, one swap symbol and a red 'X' I swapped the ingredients around until I get 2 green check marks and 1 red X. I then swap out the bad ingredient and get 1 green check mark and 2 red 'X's How am I supposed to use the clues if they do not stay consistent?

I found this annoying in the demo as well. I think position matters, so e.g. corn and onion is a recipe (not necessarily, just an example), but onion and corn won't work as far as discovery goes. either that or some other shenanigans are going on.

that link takes you to recipes if your struggling!

Yes...position matters.

This little 'mini-game' makes me think of the old Mastermind game. It would be a lot easier if you could use all one ingredient to help eliminate those that aren't used.

The issue I'm having is that the clues are useless because they change depending on what you put in. There is no way to know what to use because the recipe you are trying to discover keeps changing.

Whether it is a 3 or 4 ingredient recipe, I almost always start the same way: Corn, Potato, Tomato, Onion...(basically the order in which they appear in your inventory)

The game always gives the indicators in the same order regardless of where your ingredient is: Green Check for a correct item in the correct spot;
Yellow rotating arrows for a correct item in the wrong spot; and
Red X for an incorrect item.

If you've got all red x's - GREAT - this makes the process so much easier as you can now test an ingredient in the same spot until you find the right one - then move on to the next position.

Whatever you do...do NOT change more than one ingredient at a time. Just because you have say, 2 checks...it does NOT mean the first and second ingredient are in the right spot. It just means 2 of the ingredients are correct and in the right spot, not which ones.

Test a spot until you get either a green check or yellow arrows. If the former, move to the next unknown spot. If the latter, switch the new items spot until you get a green check...the move on to the next unknown spot. Keep repeating this process until you have solved it.

While this process works...it is difficult when you start with more than 1 check/arrow...because now you have to swap in/out a new ingredient and hope the new one also isn't a green check or yellow arrow ingredient.

Also...it helps to keep in mind when new unknown recipes show up in your cookbook. You catch that new fish, get that new spice or vegetable...then you KNOW that is one of the ingredients; just not where. So if this part of the game is an issue (and you don't want to cheat by using the wiki), you'll be better off to stop doing what you're doing when you find a new ingredient and decipher the recipes before fishing/farming for that next ingredient.

Except that the unknown items are in a triangular or diamond shape, rather than in a straight line - this mini-game is very much like the old Mastermind board game. Where you've got ingredients (and more of them) rather than colored pegs (there were 6 unless you adopted the 'empty space' game alternative)

That helped. Thank you. It seemed to me that the recipe was changing before.

Hey there!
1. Yes, the recipe discovering is indeed inspired by mastermind! :)
2. It is like Vanyel told: behind every questionmark is a definitive recipe hidden. That means there is only one solution in which you have to put the right ingredients in the right slot.

Might not be what you expected, but I have made a review...recommended but the actual write up is a link to my discussions post "32-Hours In - All but Finished - Observations" - which I think pretty much sums it up.

Yes, I've read it and shared it with my team. Thank you for your great work.
Be sure that we take your review into consideration when we work on improvements going forward. This kind of information is really valuable and we are happy to have players putting so much work into a detailed review.

Cheers

Yes you are right, Mastermind was our inspiration :D!

It is all a matter of swap and eliminate. I didn't find it that difficult

Except that sometimes an ingredient that is marked green in one try can become a red X in the next try - THAT is frustrating!
It feels like it changes the recipie completely

That is what I was running into. That kept happening, so I assumed that the game was changing the recipe to whatever closest matched what I had selected.

That is where in my original post on this topic...the worst start is a green check and or a green check and yellow arrows. If you swap out the wrong/right (depending on perspective) ingredient and or do more than one at a time...you might take out a green check item, but end up putting in a green check item in another place. In a situation like that, it is easy to assume the item removed was an incorrect ingredient.
