Do you need to play Dark Picture games in order?

I have this game for a while in my library from Humble bundle and see I accidentally got House of Ashes too and just noticed there was a game before that and one after.

I have some spare time at Christmas and will give this a go but continuing on do you need to play them in order or not?

No. They are all separate stories.

You can play the games in any order you want.

The only continuity that the games have comes from the premonitions and epilogue scene with the curator. Each game will have a premonition in it about something that happens in the next game. In the epilogue, the curator will hint at what the next story is.

If you care about those little details, then play the games in chronological order of release date.

You are free to play the games in any order, as they are all self-contained stories. However, if playing in release order, you'll be able to enjoy the "gold picture" teaser for each subsequent game, be able to find references and Easter Eggs in subsequent games, and similar. The Curator can also acknowledge you as a player of previous titles if having save data for them.
