Where did I say I don't see the subtitles?

True, very small subtitles, is there any mod?

There are no "forced blackbars", the game is just made in the 2.35:1 aspect ratio. Never believed that people still in 2019 want their 4:3 pan&scan...

Playing at any resolution, you will have black bars at the top and bottom of the screen, even on the most common 16:9 aspect ration. You can not eliminate those black bars aka it is forced.

Resolution is not necessarily the same as aspect ratio. If you watch a film shot in 2.35 on an old 4:3 CRT or on a 16:9 screen you will still get black bars on both, just a much smaller picture on the former. The only reason you get some films filling a widescreen TV is because they are shot in an aspect ratio that is 16:9 friendly and (for dvd's/Blu-rays) are encoded to fit the screen properly.

What Supermassive has done is to render the game in such a way that it will always display as a 2.35:1 picture regardless of your monitor or TV. But it's only forced in the same way a film shot at 2.35:1 is.

I appreciate that the subtitles end up outside the picture area because of the letterboxing, but agree that they aren't really that readable at current size. At times, they flash by quickly to match the on-screen action and end up looking like a line of ants.

[They do however benefit from the colored option, IMO. ]

Exactly this. Widescreen games/films often have between 1.77:1 and 1.85:1 aspect ratio, the first matches a 16:9 display to 100% and the latter is very close (there will still be black bars on top and bottom but they are so tiny that most people miss them).

2.35:1 (often called CinemaScope) is so much wider than 16:9 that the black bars are clearly visible. And then we have some really wide aspect ratios such as 2.76:1 that where used e.g by Ben Hur and The Hateful Eight. Or why not 4:1, mostly used in very old films though.

In older games, you could manage .zip files and rename them to .pak (just change the file extension name.)
I don't know if this is still true, but maybe compress with Winzip,7-zip, or other and rename the file?

thanks for answer, i used unrealpak.exe for that with unreal_tournament_4_bms and its work.whtaever finaly I DID IT SUBTITLE IS BIGGER NOW

you must extract pakchunk0-WindowsNoEditor.pak and find DefaultGame.ini in config folder (attention! if you see any "ps4" word in any file name in folder you are in wrong path) and find this words in file

UMGFonts=((ForegroundSubtitle, (FontObject=Font'"/DPGameplayFeatures/Fonts/DPSubtitles.DPSubtitles"',TypefaceFontName="Normal",Size=18)"

18 is your current size and you can change this size=48 its enough if you play with LCD tv 3meter far than from you

* you will find so many result and you must look at header en-EN mean english jp_JP mean japanese and change your language result save ,close and repack to .PAK file

your welcome =)

The game is meant for a cinematic experience. Play on an ultrawide monitor, get no bars.

could you try to make a step by step, please?
I have a family member that is hearing impaired and the bigger subtitles would help me play with him.
