HELLGATE: London

HELLGATE: London

Confused about this game and another game called the same thing...
It says this game came out in 2018. But I swear there was another game with the same name that came out in the 2000s. Is this the same game? I'm do confused. It looks somewhat different from the original. If this is the same game, is this just a rerelease? Any changes?

Also what is Hellgate Tokyo? Where do I get that?

It's the same old game just without online servers.
Tokyo was a fan-run online version or something, I'm not sure.

The game released on steam is not "HELLGATE: London", but "Hellgate Global". Korean remake of the original game.

Hellgate Tokyo was an addon for Hanbitsoft's updated Hellgate London (aka Hellgate Global), available only to Korean users of Hanbitsoft's online games portal.

There were some bug fixes and a few extra modes like a monster kill counter of sorts that will spawn a "super-unique" randomly generated monster with enhanced stats and extra affixes/powers. It's available at any level, as long as you kill a certain number of monsters (usually 40, in my recent playthrus yesterday). The "lottery game" is still there, where 3 icons symbolizing if you use a certain type of weapon damage type over a certain number of shots, kill a certain monster type a certain number of times, you get a drop of random gear and weapons.

I think the beast tokens and similar were not in the original game?

There's a number of community mods like Hellgate Revival/London 2038 (for original game only) out there, and for the first time, I've installed Reshade and some texture mods available in Steam Guides here.

Steam offers a very modified version of the base game, as it is essentially SP Global. It comes with a different version of Abyss, alongside Tokyo and other peripheral content (like the collaged Second Attack expansion and Tokyo's Base Defense). It also comes with new systems, like weapon upgrades being enchantments instead of level upgrades, and items related to them.

  • Steam is also a rather unmodified SP port of an MP game, so it too shouldn't offer the best SP-minded experience.

  • Revival, on the other hand, is always designed around solo play (like all SP mods are) - so it should be the best for the role.

  • London 2038 does try to balance SP and MP, but is primarily designed around MP.
