Possible fps bug fix for intel cpu/nvidia users
Tldr version:
1. Dont launch steam or have it running
2. Instead launch the .exe file thats located in the bin folder thats in the hellgate london folder main folder (it will launch without the launcher or starting steam) the exe should be something like hellgate_sp_x84
3.have the graphics at defult settings except for the setting : description of spell effects set that to at least low

Long version:
So like many that use Intel processors and/or nivida cards (i use both) i have had the 1fps bug. I stopped trying to progress through the game once it hit me in the kingsburry sewers( think thats the right name) and instead tried toying with settings and the nvida control panel to try to fix it. I cant totally confrimed it worked but so far after 2 hours of reloading and runing through that lvl to get as many eneimes in one space as possible to force the bug to happen and i havent had it happen once. ive combined a couple different things ive seen various sources from youtube vids to post here im making a new one so people hopefully wont have to dig so much to find it in case it dose work consistently. What ive done to fix it so far as fallows

1. Dont launch steam or have it running
2. Instead launch the .exe file thats located in the bin folder thats in the hellgate london folder main folder (it will launch without the launcher or starting steam) the exe should be something like hellgat_sp_x84
3.have the graphics at defult settings except for the setting : detail of spell effects set that to at least low

So far when running the game in the 2 hours since ive tried those steps it hasn't dipped to 1 fps instead when the bug kicks in it seems to dip mabey 5 fps for a second or two which is alot better. The cause seems to be tied to an error in the games physics and the particle affects on the larger maps. Ill keep testing with different setting tomorrow and update the results ive gotten. Im using an intel i7 and an nvida 1060 3gb and 8 gigs of ram. I hope this helps sombody despite the issues this game has and the incompetence of the various devs that handled it theres a pretty decent hack and slash rpg buried under all these issues with an intersting setting.

and i thought eye devine cybermancy was rough gem 😆

it will eventually happen again. just give it some more time.

So your partially correct but its not dropping tp single frames which is a hell of alot better so it stays at a playable frame rate to help and im not sure which of these is helping but ive done these steps to help as well:

1. Right click on the exe listed above and select properties
2. In the compatibility tab activate the 16 bit reduced color mode(dosent effect the graphics in any noticable way) and check disable full screen optimizations
3. Ive also used the program full adress aware on the exe in the bin folder

Again im not sure which 3 is helping but since doing all this and moving on to different maps and reloading them with the enemies that were normally spawned when the fps tanks ive had it only drop to around 30-40 fps for a couple of secs dont know if this will help anyone but it has so far worked for me after 3 hours. Ive even used the hd textures mod in the guides to see if that affected it and still no major fps drops. Ive yet to check out the mod that replace the particle effects so that might help to since screwing with this issue im certin its lighting and spell effects that are causing it. It seems to happen most when textures are set to the highest setting, dynamic lighting is ticked on, and detail of spell effect is set to anything higher than low ive got everything else maxed out and no game breaking fps drops so far. Ill keep updating as i get farther into the game if it gets real bad again. The effects in particular that seems to cause in are the chompers turning onto morphites, the imps that shoot the kighting ball, and the portal that spawns the 3 demons out of the floor. Hopefully this keeps working and helps others. If it still is working by thursday or friday ill try to stream it here on steam so people can see for themselves if anyone is interested.....

Up date got to the maps with the first couple hell rifts and got bad lag again found a couple other settings that seemed to help they are:
1 ran it in window
2 set shader quailty to high imstead of very high ( set shadows to the lowest setting other wise the shadows glitch out)
3 ran in windows xp compatibility mode
4 turn model view distance down to medium or high
5 turn off aa and vsync( both of these seemed to have no effect on visuals)

As a note it hasnt stopped the fps bug but has mitigated it. When the bug kicks in it drops to around 20-30 fps. So after all this experimentation i think its conclusive the fps bug is caused by 2 things 1 the lighting engine is largely broken 2. The game respawns to many enemies at once and cant handle placing them in the maps. The only real fix that could come about would be some one in the modding community porting the files related to the lighting and particle effects from the retail copy but i dont know how feasible that is or if it is even possible.

This is a known bug. No amount of system/setting tweaks will fix it. The code needs to be patched. There is a workaround:

https://steamcommunity.com/app/939520/discussions/0/1651043320650972607/

From Zor (the guy that made the workaround):

"...The game makes an excessive number of ray cast queries under certain circumstances. Disabling ray casting altogether makes the game playable. This is done by patching the hkpMoppLongRayVirtualMachine::queryRayOnTree() function from the Havok Physics library used in the game, so that it simply returns rather than running the bytecode passed to it..."

The Steam version of the game is broken and pretty much abandonware. You'd be better off picking this game up on eBay or Amazon for $15 and playing it with the Revival updates. Don't get me wrong, I absolutely love Hellgate London, but this version sitting here on Steam should be pulled down.

EDIT: I have a few posts in this thread that talk about getting the workaround setup --

I know i said in my last post my tweaking didnt fix it but did mitigate so far in my testing was mainly just doing it for people that didnt want to bother with the tool cuz alot of inexpereinced people will have trouble setting it up or wont find the post cuz some of the stuff is buried.... But with your post in this thread with the links will at least make it easier
