I don't think you can actually damage the crank bolt, so it's likely there's something missing somewhere along the line that's stopping you from being able to tighten it.
You can try taking a little look at this look if you like:

I cover installing the crank bolt in there.
Check out the section entitled Engine Timing - Crankshaft. (Part Two).
That'll walk you through the process.
Hopefully that'll bail you out.
I know of an engine bug where there has been the tendency for the pistons to appear outside of the engine block if the game was quit and reloaded with the engine on the engine stand and rotated away from the usual upright vertical position. You'd quite often see pics posted on Discord where the pistons were poking out of the sump/ away from the cylinders if there was no sump on it at the time.
Whether this is the bug in question or not I couldn't say for sure, but that's the only real one I know of right now.
If you've got it, or don't mind getting it, Discord is probably a better bet over the Steam forums. It's way more active the the Steam forums and you're likely to get a far quicker response to any questions you may have. Quite often instantly.
Maybe not always by the devs, but there's an awesome crowd of players on there, many of whom have plenty of experience with the game and will be able to help you out in no time.
All the know issues and bugs will be posted on there too, so you'll quickly and easily see all the little problems that could arise.
