Dear Friends,
As usual, we'll start with the short version. Goblinz are alive and hard at work on the final chapter of the trilogy. Unfortunately, due to internal problems and the lockdown, work isn't going nearly as fast as we planned. Currently we are aiming for a Fall 2021 release on all platforms. Yes, it's ugly.
That was the short version. Now to some silver linings! 🙂
First of all, I'd like to wish you a Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays! Let's hope we will remember 2020 as "that dark year" and soon it will fade away... Wishful thinking? Perhaps, but... it's Christmas!
The year has been eventful at Goblinz as well - we were forced to close our office and some members gave us some serious frights. Life and death serious. We are now used to fully working from home and everyone is out of danger, but, if at all possible, I do not wish to repeat those sleepless nights any time soon. I'd like to say that I hope that your year has been kinder, but I know that it likely hasn't...
For my part the difficulties helped me realize (again) that am surrounded by fantastic friends, family, co-workers, publisher and blessed with amazing fans! Thank you for so many wishes and letters of support!!!
Returning to True Fear 3 was difficult. Over the years I have delegated some of my work, concentrating more on writing. However, feeling that I owed to fully retake the reins for the final part, I went back into micro-management... Unsurprisingly I have discovered that some of my vision has not been fully implemented and while the team was standing and ready to finish the game, I embarked on a lengthy journey of "fixing" what was already working, wasting a lot of time and sabotaging morale.
There was one scene, for example, codenamed Corridor-2-Charles-Door, that was finished and playable, but I didn't like a few details... Now, three months and over 100 hours from 9 people later, the scene is playable again... Yay! Is it better and closer to my original concept? Sure. Was it was worth it? Probably not.
About a month ago our publisher suggested that finishing Part 3 at the quality I insisted on was "impossible" - even the remaining costs were higher than the total expected revenues. We agreed that Goblinz will finish the game on our own, accepting the losses and getting back into debt again. This is a bad news with a silver lining - we are absolutely free now and the current design makes no compromises. Not only does Part 3 have two ending as I wanted, but the story will remain exactly as intended - before parts were censured for our original release on Big Fish Games.
All in all, I see this as something that, perhaps, was unavoidable. I think that a good trilogy always revisits the beginning, but with a new understanding. As such, we too at Goblinz, after spending a decade working on True Fear, will come out of it as a broke indie developer again, but hopefully with experience and a new perspective! 🙂
So Part 3 is not canceled and definitely getting done! As for the dates, I'm being told that if I don't curb my "perfectionism", even Fall 2021 sound optimistic. I'll do my best to try and keep a balance!
Best wishes and love from the whole team!! ❤️❤️❤️
Yours truly,
Dimmie Azu
