what is a special attack?

there is a perk that gives you critical hits after you land a special attack, but i don't know what's considered a special attack

Special attacks are counters after you dodge or block. I was wondering what that was too but there is a detail of it somewhere in game.

they are the '' abilities '' in the card menu and when you add them a special modifier they become special attack, like dash strike with healing card is a special attack, if you jump kick an enemy without a special modifier it is not considered special attack though
