To the many people complaining about forced Epic Services
I just checked the reviews and the most rated review explains how to do it. Here you go:

Make sure the Epic Store program is uninstalled then do this:

Before launching the game for the first time, go there -> "C:\SteamLibrary\steamapps\common\Dead Island 2" and delete the EpicGameLauncher folder.

Then open the "DeadIsland.ini" file in notepad and modify the "NoOperation=0" to "NoOperation=1"

I tried this after launched the game a first time and installed Epic Games Services. I succeed to link my Epic account but after the intro the game is stuck on connecting to Epic Games Services screen. I un-installed Epic Games Services in the game's prefixe using Protontricks, and the game is still launching without it, but is still stuck on connecting to Epic Games Services. To get pass this, I went offline by disabling Wi-Fi before launching the game, then re-enabled it to get pass the entitlements screen. Hoping they will fix this for Steam Deck players.

This is something what should be the default Option on Steam...
If people want to add "EOS" / Epig for their game then it should be optional as a 3rd Party Download or something...

This thread is pretty worthless if there's no confirmation that the online between Steam players works with this Epic Online Services bypass.

Don't fret. Here you go:

Hi Hybrid, the Epic Games Launcher isn't required to play the game. If you prefer enjoying either single-player or multiplayer with other Steam users, you won't need the Epic Games Launcher.

However, for crossplay with players who own the game on EGS, the launcher will be necessary to sync up friends lists.

Quoting a community manager that plays fast and loose with the truth is not the same thing as actually confirming whether or not it is possible for Steam players to play with other Steam players while using this unofficial Epic Online Services bypass.

Buy the game, test it and then refund it if you're so cynical. You've got 2h to test it. That's more than enough.

Why would I buy a game that forces the installation of Epic Online Services on top of having Denuvo DRM which they only disclosed at the very last minute in an attempt at deceitful and manipulative marketing?

You own the game. You're not being paid to sing praises about it, but yet here you are. How about you go and test it, eh?

For someone finger wagging at people about supposed solutions, you sure are not doing a great job at being a sales-person. I sure hope they're not paying you too much.

If I'm not doing a great job at being a salesperson it's because I'm not trying to sell anything. But you keep on fighting windmills... Haha

While its great that the community has found a workaround, it should have never been there in the first place. Whoever decided to add the epic stuff to the steam release should patch it out themselves.

Using the above method, im able to play single player. I can't play online at all unless I download the EOS crap.

So it turns out that the solution provided in this thread isn't the most viable for this online coop game. I'm glad that you can at least play single-player. :Shrugs:

Thanks for the information in any case. o7
