Wow I understand the negative feedback/reviews I saw when this game first released.
At least in the beginning, you really feel weak in a way that does not feel good to play. Sure it looks good visually but a lot of things just feels like plastic in this game. Maybe it's just the lack of feedback in a lot of actions? Even the execution moves feel lacking. The only thing that feels good are the fully charged heavy attacks. How long does it take before things start feeling better or is this plastic feeling throughout the whole game?

Must be playing different games because the hit feedback, sound effects, visual effect and everything that goes into making the combat feel impactful is excellent in this game.

I don't know what you mean by "plastic" as the gore system is better then any game like it. I really don't understand your view of the combat feedback when this game has everything to make combat feel great.

I mean a quick google shows plenty of ppl saying similar things to me. Try playing the game with a completely new save file with no bonus stats and aim to fight everything that moves. It's not hard once you understand what the game wants you to do, just feels bad. Judging from the fact that you don't own the game on Steam you're likely to be a vet with nostalgia of the early game without remembering what it feels like without super weapons or bonus stats. I don't remember Dead Island 1 or Riptide being like this unless you're using a short range knife but even then it feels more visceral.

I'm not talking about the graphics or the gore system. By plastic I mean it feels like a fake substitute for something real. Like I hit something and I see it deform a bit but it doesn't react the way I expect. The bruising looks okay but the bodies aren't moving. They kind of just jiggle in place. It's really noticeable when you kill a zombie and it switches to dead. Then you start hitting the dead zombie and it barely twitches. Oddly enough there's no inbetween when fighting a zombie, you're either sending the zombie flying or the zombie barely feels the impact of your blows. It's also shown when you start hitting the stuff in houses. It all looks photo realistic but then you start trying to interact with it and it all breaks you out of the immersion.

lol just get to your point. You're clearly trying to say something that you didn't want to bring up in the initial post.

Just kick them. Ez game.
Not sure what you are saying, can you clarify, OP? Physics are in the place, gore is superior to any other game, enemies are flying, if they are not flying their limbs getting cut or dangling by the thread after the blow, whole chunks of body getting chopped away... but enemy not twitches enough when you deal weak damage? Maybe because enemy reacting like that would considered a stagger where enemy would not be able to attack you therefore making you pretty much invisible? Or maybe the whole point is to force you to focus on the limbs instead without dancing around them too much after each blow 'impacting' them?

I played this on PS5 after release and now I started new save. Don't see any 'lack of impact' per se.

I dont like battle royales but clearly the direction they went with Dead Island 2 is not for me. Looking around online with actual answers, it seems like they went the route of making normal weapons pretty crappy without setup. You need to mod them and/or use the right skill cards to be much more effective. That's when the game shines. The issue is I'm a hoarder lol and I barely used weapon mods in these type of games outside of boss fights due to weapon durability. Even then the animations and impacts are still a little wonky. Particularly, noticeable when going from dead to undead or undead to dead. Sure the gore system is good from what I can see but the actual attacks making the gore don't look right to me. They slap more than they crunch if that makes sense. It's like you're tenderizing the zombies. I don't get how ppl here don't see it.

It's a good thing you're starting to realize that you're not living in this world all by yourself. Aside from that, it seems you're the only person experiencing these issues. The "crunch" you mentioned is easily done by hitting zombies with a sledgehammer. And I don't find the animations to be close to wonky at all.

Yeah, the weapons feel very different from each other, which I've found quite satisfying.
