Why not just go to inventory and scrap it for materials instead of dropping it? If you don't have the option yet you soon will.

Shortly after unlocking that features the F keys are used for crafting.

Was looking to configure F1 for objectives and I find quite painfull to use two hands when I got to open weapon tab to drop improvised weapons with another hand since my fingers are not agiles to go here and go over the keyboard. C'mon F4 to drop weapon? I had to rebind weapon wheel to Tab otherwise it would be a nightmare.
