You might actually be thinking of Dead Island 2 a year ago, but it was exclusive to Epic. I'm not sure Riptide was ever called mediocre. It was just more of the same in a different location with slight improvements. Improvements, but not exactly great. It was better than the original, as I heard it.

Perhaps you are thinking in Riptide, no, it was an expansion to the first game and it was't bad...or perhaps you have seen teaser videos of Dead Island 2 by other studios that were cancelled, the development of this game was not a pathway of roses.

Ah, yes, there are old trailers from like 8 years ago or something, but never released.

Actually it was a full game successor to Dead Island 1, not an expansion. But as it felt like pretty much more of the very same formula I get what you mean.

Well there was Riptide, then the original dead island 2 that got spin off into dying light, then the scrapped dead island 2 with trailers from like 8 years ago... it's almost a miracle the game came out actually working when it finally released...

Yes and no.

Riptide was indeed a expansion of the story. The beginning of Dead Island Riptide was 1 hour after the end of Dead Island 1.

But Riptide was not a expansion or DLC for Dead Island 1. It was a complete stand alone sequel. You don't need to finish Dead Island 1 first, you didn't even need Dead Island 1. It was just a stand-alone game, that expanded the story of Dead Island 1.

I think that's the confusing people have. So both of you are kinda right.

it wasnt a new game therefore its a expansion. it was a standalone expansion that you were encouraged to play through dead island before playing so you can import your save

So, Mass Effect 2 and 3 are also expansions and not a stand alone games, since you can transfer saves?

no? DIR re-uses MANY of the assets from DI, it wasnt a numbered sequel, it takes place immediately after dead island, has all the mechanics from dead island, and has the exact same graphical quality. it is in every way a standalone expansion.

Isn't that what I said? I literally said that Riptide happened exactly 1 hour after the end of Dead Island 1. So, in this case I agreed with you that it is a expansion in the story.

But it isn't a expansion game where you need to have the "original" game. So, it's still a stand-alone game. I just pointed out that "expansion" can have different meanings. That's why I said from the beginning "Yes and no" but it just depends on what kind of "expansions" you guys mean.
