I'm offended.
Hi,

being called "they" offends me and sadly all characters seem to be non-binary in this game.

Is everyone in LA nowadays genderless?

And yes, this is not a joke, Emma Jaunt and everyone adressing my character with "they" breaks my immersion.

No need to call me names, but I at least expect this information on the character selection screen, if you go that route.

It's only he and she, nothing more.

I wasn't really aware that the "singular they" was used in literature before (only read "thou" instead of "you" often) and I actually think that Dead Island 2 probably doesn't use it for pandering.

But it's actually sad that I'm already assuming the worst every time where it COULD be virtue signaling.

I can kinda confirm this, normally I should identify with these people, they want to represent me, but in reality they alienated me and I try to avoid any games&movies that activists worked on.

If I remember correctly weren't you addressed similarly in Dead Island 1, because although you only played as 1 character the other 3 characters were with you in third person cutscenes and from the story's point of view all 4 characters travelled and did missions together? So I assume its the same in this game, you the player play as 1 character but from the NPCs point of view all characters are involved in the story. So "they" simply means that the NPCs see the entire team of slayers physically present and not just you.

See we talked about this, the first "they" is dropped before coop is possible and I haven't seen any other survivors in cutscenes so far.

And also in subtitles in other languages use gendered singular pronouns like he/she.

After discussing this, I don't assume ill intent/virtue signaling anymore.

It's nothing like having a religion forced on you and as someone born and raised in that Jehovah's Witnesses crap I'm offended that you would try to draw a comparison between these things.

It's the exact same as having religion pushed down your throat. They're literally a cult. The more you try and push it onto people, the more people will hate it. That's all they're doing by constantly slamming it in our faces. There's subtle ways to go about it. I don't care if you're offended, you people need thicker skin. The comparison is spot on. The only difference is these people keep knocking on my TV screen or monitor. There's only a man and a woman, and when archeologists dig us up in 1000 years, that's all they'll see. Here in Canada, these people have their own TV Network. I think it's time they do this for movies and games as well. You don't need to constantly spout they them nonsense in order to show people deserve to be treated like human beings. These people are not oppressed at all and have the exact same rights as anyone else.

Who's a cult? The human race? What are you even talking about about? You're upset about a common pronoun used in the English language? But I'm the one who needs thicker skin? Do you have any idea how ridiculous you sound?

I think you can't follow the discussion, because you lack critical information/knowledge.
And sometimes ignorance is bliss.

No I get it. You are just another "omg people who are different than me want to be recognized and respected as human beings and it's ruining EVERYTHING" anti-woke dudes. But because this game didn't pass your arbitrary limits test for "virtue signaling" you are giving it a pass. That doesn't make you better than the other guy who is more blatantly signalling his disdain for people that are different than him. Maybe when you can play a game or watch a movie or whatever and not care about this stuff AT ALL because it DOESN'T MATTER, you'll figure it out.

using they means the devs don't have to record two separate dialog for each NPC as the main character can be a male or female.

Yeah, you're right. I do not recall a single cutscene in this game where other slayers were also present with you. And Emma refers to you as "they" at the beginning when you try to save that guys by lifting the debris off him, if all of the characters were present they could easily achieve that. I assume they perhaps didn't want to record hundreds of lines more which would include the name of each separate character(there are 6 of them), so they just went for "they" as an universal term. Now you could say that at the very least they could have just used "he" and "she", but even in that case it would be kinda odd, I mean imagine having a friend and never calling him by his name and always saying "he" xD. So I get your point. However in my case I'm just happy this game finally came out despite people thinking it never would and that its a solid game and is finally on Steam now, and tbh I don't really care that much about "they", I just want to enjoy the game.

You don't get it, because you don't know anything, but still try to lecture people.

In this case I suggest refraining from further discussion or really dig into the topic.

And btw I technically belong to the group of people that "want to be recognized and respected as human beings and it's ruining EVERYTHING" - I know that must be insanely difficult to understand for you.

That's also why you didn't understand the religion analogy before, I can believe something, but I don't need to convert people, not even confront them with it, because it's a personal thing.

Is this your first video game? Games have been using they for decades to side step needing to record the same dialogue multiple times with a different pronoun when different gendered characters are available. It's not new, and it has nothing to do with being "woke."

What a brain dead take, and I really pity anyone who has this take.

Why even comment when you refuse to read the discussion?

As I said, it's still inconsistent with the subtitles, but I think you're right that it was just done to save time/voice lines/money.

And sure, I hope everyone who bought the game enjoys it.

I mean do I need to? You gave your reason for being offended, I don't care if you're going to use your language as an excuse for being offended. In English, this is what They means. This is why they did it. We've been doing it since the 80s my guy. Be offended all you want, it's your life I'm not going to tell you how to live your life. But your offense has 0 merit. They has always been a catch all for when you want to refer to an individual but don't know their gender yet.

And here it is being used by a video game company that doesn't know which character you chose, and didn't want to rerecord dialogue just to change he to she or vice versa.

But go on, keep telling us how our language should be different cuz of your language. lol
