Maybe they are preparing a mega ultra heavy hype for Dead Island 3 in ten or so years.

Or they just lost their scriptwriter before the game launched on epic and no one can take over and finish or at least polish for a decent ending.

There will be no more expansions for the game. There may still be DLC packs for cosmetics. This isn't Dying Light where there's a ton of sequel style expansions.

More than likely the ending is a setup for Dead Island 3.

If they ever make a 3 I hope they retcon the generic "child is the cure" ending and make something unique out of it

it gives you the crossbow from Haus to use everywhere and the disc launcher obtained at the end of SoLA..
And some pretty good skill cards for your action style..
And some extra bits of info so you don't feel totally cheated after the main story cliffhanger ending..
