Does epic and steam crossplay actually work?

i bought the game on epic a friend bought it through steam and for some reason we cant join each others matches
both of us have our epic n steam accounts linked so im not sure why we cant join cause everything says this game has crossplay
both of us have our sessions set to public and were both signed into steam and epic when playing but whenever i send him an invite through epic i receive some error saying eos user invalid and when i join steam says i dont have the license to launch the game
please let me know what im missing cause this makes no sense to me

Crossplay is broken in the game. Not for everyone, but for a lot of people. It has been that way pretty much since launch. There are some fixes out there that work for some, but unfortunately I'm part of the minority that simply have a broken game.

It sucks as I have a friend who really wants to play it with me and I've had to turn him down again and again as there is nothing I can do.
